just a weirdo in love with a commercial

That’s what I am.

Here’s the newest Old Spice commercial. Yes. Old Spice.

I have a particular fondness for Old Spice. My dad used to wear it every day when I was a little kid, so I have a deep sensory memory attached to it. And we can all remember that whistling Old Spice theme and the rugged sailor coming home from the sea — smelling great, amazingly, and not like dead fish. It was very swoony and romantic to my little girl sensibilities. But for many years now, if you ever even saw an Old Spice commercial, they just seemed played, awkward, as if they’d lost their way, knew darn well they had, and were hanging their spicy-sweet heads in shame.

Not anymore, pippa.

Say hello to the new Old Spice.

Yummy. And hilarious. Good job, Old Spice!

I have to give kudos to this actor, too. I think he’s brilliant in this.

  1. Brian and I were laughing hysterically at this thing! Look at me….look at your man…back at me…back at your man… Anything is possible!

Why didn’t they show this during the Super Bowl? It was funnier than most of the commercials on that day.

  2. I can’t see the video at work, but I’ve been digging Old Spice since a couple of years ago when they got Bruce Campbell to kick off their new campaign. It was the “experience” commercial and it was awesome.

  3. Kathi — I know! It’s hilarious. I laugh out loud at the end: “I’m on a horse.”

Like, what?? Yes, you are. They’ve thrown every “female desire” cliche into this commercial. Maybe certain women — or womyn — would find it offensive, but I find it hysterical.

Cullen — I don’t remember that one, but I do love Bruce Campbell.

  4. I love this commercial. It’s the one ad that I actually enjoy right now – when I see it, I stop what I am doing to bask in its brilliance. That actor is amazing in this spot. Love it!

  5. Cara — I know, right? He’s perfect. His look, his voice, his tone. And the writing. It’s a perfectly written commercial, in my opinion.

Menfolk: You all need to start using “I’m on a horse” — just whenever — around women. See what effect it has. I don’t care that you’re not on a horse. Just say you are, with confidence. Okay?

Cullen — Thanks for that link. I need to check it out.

Mandy — Me too. They’re both yum.

  6. I’ve watched this about five times in a row, trying to place who the young man reminds me of.
    Sean Connery.
    It’s perfection in every detail.

  7. “I’m on a horse.” bwahahahahahaha! He’s on a yacht, he’s on a horse, he’s in another part of the world, he’s behind the wheel of a large aut-o-mo-bile.

Same as it ever was… but that’s another commercial.

  8. Trace, have you seen the one that’s much shorter, and he’s riding the horse backwards? “I’m riding this horse backwards.” Hahahaha.

Frank and I watch these commercials every time, because they’re hilarious.
