yeah, yeah, american idol, sorta

I only have a few things to say about American Idol last night, because I only saw bits and pieces. They sang Stevie Wonder songs — freakin’ Stevie Wonder!!

1) Li’l Woody Allen sang “Part-Time Lover.” Now that’s just icky, icky, ICKY! HE IS 16, for God’s sake! No one wants to hear him even TALK about that. “Knowin’ it’s so wrong, but feelin’ so right.” AHHH!! Where are your parents, young man?? You’re grounded, or something.

It’s just impossible for me to take him seriously because of his prominent Groucho Marx eyebrows and, last night, his very prominent — and may I say unfortunate? — Groucho Marx walk/dance steps. I’ve noticed, too, he has a slight lisp when he sings. It seems to me that this could be worked on — uh, that this SHOULD be worked on.

2) Mandisa — my new favorite. She is just LIT from within, that girl. And can she ever SAHHHHNGG!!

3) Katherine McPhee — Simon said she reminds him of Kelly Clarkson. You know what? I think she’s beautiful and I think she can DEFINITELY sing.

BUT …. I remember Kelly, during competition, not seeming to really get just how GOOD she was. She had a freshness and lightness to her. And by “lightness” I mean she didn’t take herself so seriously — was kind of amazed by it all, even.

This girl, Katherine, is very self-aware, conscious of her beauty and talent. And that’s not necessarily a good thing here. There’s a wee bit of the diva I’ve seen creepin’ in. You know, a bit. Gotta keep an eye on her.

4) Still LOVE Taylor and ….

5) …. not sure what I think of that Rudy Huxtable, er, Paris Bennett. Very much a schoolgirl playing dress up to me. Huge voice, just …. I dunno ….. something about her …… Dare I say she has no sex appeal?

Whereas,

6) Chris …. ahem.

Thoughts, anyone?

  1. As I said in my blog, I thought Chris easily dominated all the other contestants last night. BUT, I was also very impressed with Mandisa, Paris and Taylor. Taylor’s still my favorite, and those girls can sing, but they better start doing something special if they want to beat Chris.

Speaking of beating, Kevin deserves one. If this isn’t a case of someone beginning to believe their own PR I don’t know what is. He started out so humble … well, not anymore.

  2. Chris looks exactly like my ex-boyfriend. Yes, EXACTLY LIKE HIM. I can’t even watch this show. Fugeddaboutit. Too weird. And if my husband knew that there was a guy on TV that looked exactly like the guy I dated for 5 years who could also croon? Yeah… That’d be bad. So we’ll just not go there.

  3. Chris. Ahem, INDEED.

I also don’t like how Kevin is now refusing to take criticism – you can see it. You can see how he has gotten puffed up … If he’s serious about his work, then he needs to get serious about taking criticism.

  4. A talk show host was talking about Kevin’s lisp last week after he sang, “Thtarry thtarry night…”

Chris’ performance was good, but it was just a watered-down Chili Peppers version.

I still say Mandisa will win. I also still say that the only one I care to watch is Taylor.

  5. I was laughing my butt off during Kevin’s performance. I like Taylor, as well. I think it’s time they got somebody with soul that is a little older….or at least older looking.

  6. New to your site. I’ve been reading for a few weeks (via Cullen’s site), but have not commented.

I had to today though because of your take on Katherine. I’ve been getting the same vibe the last few weeks. I can’t put my finger on it, but it is there.

Also agree with the Paris take and the Kevin take. I too LOVE Taylor…thought he was great last night.

I was pleasantly surprised by Bucky as well.

    And Chris…I couldn’t agree more.

  7. On Kevin — YES!! You guys are all saying what I didn’t: he’s not taking his criticism, either. So, he looks like Woody Allen, moves like Groucho Marx, AND he’s puffed-up like …. somebody puffed up!!!

Shannon — WELCOME! And thanks for saying that about Katherine. I thought maybe it was just me.

    And red, YES! Chris: ahem.

  8. if there were a song with no “S” sound in it, that is the one “Kevin is my Heavin” should thing. ahem… sing.

i like katherine. i think she is “the whole package.” i love mandisa. i love taylor.

and i won’t tell you what i think about chris, but it probably jives with the rest of the nation. oh, don’t you know his little wife is kicking herself for this???

  9. she just really backed him up – sold his sob story as the greatest-dad-ever to her two kids, and now he is the nation’s sex symbol and she is at home.

    prolly kickin’ herself.

    thats all i’m sayin’!
