theme yurts for the syc

I’m trying to remember how it became the “Sudden” Yurt Commune. I think something someone said in one of the early posts about it? While it was still just a twinkle in my eye? I don’t remember, but I know that phrase is out there.

I hit on an idea in the comments of the post below:

We need theme yurts in the SYC. I don’t like the word “theme,” really, because it sounds like Disneyland or something and the SYC is WAY cooler than Disneyland, but I can’t think of another word here. “Theme” also makes me think of “A Christmas Story” and Ralphie’s teacher: I want you to compose ……… a theme! I will think of a better name. I will!

Anyhoo. (I stole that word from Sheila. I totally did. I’m sorry, Sheila.)

The idea would be this: Each member of the SYC — and our membership requirements are very rigorous; you’re a member if you WANT to be a member — can choose for himself or herself a yurt that they host. It’s that person’s baby. Yes, it’s true that in the comments of the post below, I became all despotic, as is my nature, and ASSIGNED a rock ‘n’ roll yurt to Cullen and NF, which they do not have to do. Not at all. Just an idea.

BUT …. I think it would be cool for people to host a yurt that features something they’re passionate about and we can all come and “hang out” in there. Maybe Sheila would do a movie yurt. Jayne would do a cooking yurt. Sarahk would do the gun-toting yurt. Kate P would do a YA yurt. Brian would do the Photoshop yurt, because he has mad skillz. See? Something like that. Something that you’re passionate about, something that you can teach or just share with others. For instance, mine would be the Liam Neeson yurt or the Sweeney Todd yurt or the pouring water on the movie theater seat yurt, for instance, since these are the consuming passions of my life. (The ideas above are NOT demands, just ideas.)

Honestly, I’m hoping for a crochet yurt. I started learning several years ago, stopped doing it, but I really liked it and I need me some instruction, pippa!

These “theme” (argh) yurts — “specialty” yurts?? (ARGH )– can be of your own choosing. Both the theme and the look of it. Yes, I’m the benevolent dictator of the SYC, but these would be yours to do with whatever you wish and we’d all reap the benefits of your expertise and talent! Hurrah!!

It would be so cool if we could add to our gallery of photos in the SYC category. There’s some neat stuff at the SYC. Going through all those photos makes me happy.

So if you’d like to create your own theme/specialty/better word to come yurt, announce it in the comments, please oh please. If you have time to do some Googling and find a picture of a yurt you fancied for your specialty yurt, I would LOVE it if you posted a link to it in the comments so I could upload it to the SYC category in the sidebar with your description of it. Or draw one. Or Photoshop one. Whatever. It’s your wizard master crackerjack passion hotshot something yurt.

Can’t wait to hear what your yurts will be. Describe in as much detail as you wish. I need this happy place right now.

So let’s do some work on the SYC.

And pictures, crackie! Picturrrres!!

  1. Oh, I am IN. But I will defer the rock ‘n’ roll yurt to Cullen, and come up with something else…. something benignly surreal. There will be books and a fireplace and a cat. But I don’t want to take Kate P’s Library Yurt (as I predict shall soon come to pass).

A-HA. The Sci-Fi Yurt. Buckles swashed and derring-do done, with panache. Laws of Physics recommended, but not strictly required.

  2. I posted my entry in the Orianthi post. I want a Sleeper Coach. It’d have to have some 70s-esque fantasy scene airbrushed on the side too. I’ll see about doing some Photoshoppery. Or see what NF has in mind.

  3. Kathi — That’s great! Do you crochet, too?

Brian — I just went and checked out your yurts. I’m dying! So funny!! I love them.

You must go check out Brian’s theme yurts, pippa. Maybe he can make you a custom one.

  4. I don’t crochet. I tried once and didn’t get it. But, now that I knit I probably would be able to learn.

Since I don’t have mad Photoshop skillz like Brian, I may not be able to figure out how to make this knitted Denzel yurt, but I’ll try. I did do a search for yurts and found some amazing ones that people have built.

  5. Hmmmm.. I want in, but it requires a bit more thought. I don’t have water pouring skills. I’m a violinist and ballroom dancer. Too lame?

  6. Jess — No! Those are fabulous. Ballroom dancing??? Yes, please. Violin? Again with the “please.” I will be in your yurt all the DAMN time.

roo — Oooh, when I’m not at Jess’, I will be at yours. You had mad insane talents, woman. I have this belief that if I’m allowed to touch you just once, a teensy weensy bit of them will rub off on me.

Kathi — I imagine you’d pick up crochet pretty fast. I would definitely love the knitting/Denzel/wine yurt. How fun. Let’s knit sweaters while drunk on red wine and Denzel! And then make the men wear them. Hahahaha.

My yurt instructional would be over in 2 seconds:

“Here’s how you pour water on the movie theater seat next to you to prevent invasion of your personal space. See me pouring water? Yeah. Thanks for coming.”

  7. The men may stay away from my yurt – if they are required to wear Denzel-inspired knitted sweaters from someone who is a bit tipsy on wine. But the wine may be a drawing point.

  8. Ooooooh. I like the idea of a Gun-Totin’ Yurt. Maybe the Mr. Shiny Yurt. And when the SYC comes under attack from other yurt communes, we will be prepared to defend ourselves.

  9. Please don’t make me have an accounting and/or tax preparation yurt. I will do everyone’s taxes, of course, as agreed in a previous SYC thread, but I don’t want that to be my yurt “theme”.

    I want a fun yurt!

I just don’t know what kind of fun…yet.

  10. oh, wow. I am so torn. So many possible themes. Maybe a theater yurt where we stage readings. Oooor a SOUP yurt. I love soup. I love to MAKE soup. I could have cauldrons of soup and a little wood stove to bake bread which might be uncomfortable in the summer so maybe during summer I’d tend a little garden and make salads because cold soups have really never taken off for me…

…um. Theater Soup Yurt? Hmm. I need to think about this more.

  11. Marisa – I will spend all day in your yurt. I think my yurt will have to feature a stable wormhole to your Soup Yurt. I LURVES soup. My SIL & BIL bought me “The Soup Bible” for Christmas one year, such is my well-known mania for soup.

  12. Awesome! I love people who love soup. And it makes such a good community activity. It’s the sort of thing people can contribute to and sit around and talk while vegetables are chopped or it can sit in the pot half the evening while you play cards and it just gets better.

I love soup and I love the environment soup creates in my kitchen.

Yeah… Soup Yurt it is. 🙂
