Because these are the kinds of things that clog my brain. Not the plight of GM or Chrysler, not the immigration issue, not the next Supreme Court appointment. No. No. It’s the minutiae that disables me, the excessive wondering if I’m normal which basically makes me abnormal which is no real surprise here.
So please. Answer these for me. (Copy and paste, copy and paste, pippa.)
You may give what you think is a typical, sensible range for these.
1) How many pairs of underwear should a person have?
2) How many bras should a woman have? (Men, unless you have an ardent opinion, you may skip this.)
3) How many pairs of socks?
4) How many purses should a woman have? (Men, see note above.)
5) How many ties should a man have?
6) How many pairs of shoes should a woman have? A man?
7) How many sheet sets should a person have for their bed — just the one bed?
8) How many pairs of sunglasses should a person have? (I live in Southern California; this is an issue. You are JUDGED by how many pairs of sunglasses you have.)
That’s all for now. Thankee.
1) How many pairs of underwear should a person have?
What kind? I have about 10 pairs of regular cotton underwear, which I wear with jeans, shorts, etc. I have about four pairs of “panty girdles” (word “panty”=hate) that I wear with dress pants and/or skirts and dresses. I also have some cotton granny panties, but I never wear them.
2) How many bras should a woman have? (Men, unless you have an ardent opinion, you may skip this.)
I have about 10 bras, but only wear five or six on a regular basis. This requires mid-week washing, which I hate, but can’t be helped.
3) How many pairs of socks?
You wear socks in Cali? I would never. I only have about four or five pairs. I do, however, have several pairs of “trouser socks” that I wear with dress pants in the winter.
4) How many purses should a woman have? (Men, see note above.)
I only have one purse, but it’s a Miche purse. I have about ten of the covers. But when I *did* have a purse, I had a black one, a navy one, a brown one, and a white one, plus a couple of casual ones.
5) How many ties should a man have?
As many as he wants. I like ties.
6) How many pairs of shoes should a woman have? A man?
I am not the person to ask this question, as I have over 40 pairs of shoes. My husband is just as bad, as he is the King of Boots.
7) How many sheet sets should a person have for their bed — just the one bed?
Two. One regular and one flannel.
8) How many pairs of sunglasses should a person have? (I live in Southern California; this is an issue. You are JUDGED by how many pairs of sunglasses you have.)
I can barely keep track of the one pair I have. I am NOTORIOUS for losing them, so I only buy cheap ones.
Oh, and gentlemen? Your tie should reach your belt. Please don’t make me tell you again. kthx.
1) How many pairs of underwear should a person have?
Men should own at least 14 pair. Women should own more than this because y’all get all those specialty garments.
2) How many bras should a woman have? (Men, unless you have an ardent opinion, you may skip this.)skipped
3) How many pairs of socks?
Again, I say 14.
4) How many purses should a woman have? (Men, see note above.)
5) How many ties should a man have?
Tough call. If you don’t wear suits often, you can get away with five. If you wear suits more than once a week, you should probably own no less than 10.
6) How many pairs of shoes should a woman have? A man?
Man, at least four – athletic, casual, semi-dress and dress. Women, sheesh … a whole bunch.
7) How many sheet sets should a person have for their bed — just the one bed?
Should have, hmm. At least three, I would think. I can’t tell you how many years we survived on one set.
8) How many pairs of sunglasses should a person have? (I live in Southern California; this is an issue. You are JUDGED by how many pairs of sunglasses you have.)
I’m a one-pair person.
1) How many pairs of underwear should a person have?
Depends on how frequently you normally do laundry. Minimum of one per day per laundry period plus 2 or 3 extras.
2) How many bras should a woman have? (Men, unless you have an ardent opinion, you may skip this.)
I do have an opinion. See above. Should hold for all underclothes. Some extras may be required due to dress styles (strapless, different colors, etc).
A note here: As a man I must point out that as much as I appreciate fine female forms, bras are UNDERclothes and should under no circumstances be showing when you are standing/sitting normally. If we want to see something under your shirt, it’s not the bra strap, and most of us don’t want our lady showing that off to others. Let them guess. In addition, our ladies usually don’t want us catching that view from others. Respect them a little. We’re not leaving them, and if we were the type to, you really don’t want us anyway.
3) How many pairs of socks?
See 1 and 2 above, but alter for more if various colors or styles are needed for your professional dress. Socks may require more extras because they are more prone to holes and such.
4) How many purses should a woman have? (Men, see note above.)
This is style based. The number you need depends on the variety of your wardrobe. Women who are required to dress up (professionally, charity, church work, etc) will require more. I prefer all style-based accessories to be picked in such a manner as to minimize the number, purely from a financial viewpoint. Purses aren’t cheap, they can take up a ton of space to store so buy ones that go with more than one outfit. I do make exceptions for particularly special occasions, and fortunately for me (and my wallet), my lady agrees.
BTW – wallets. Men should only require one, and for security reasons, I recommend a small one that can be carried in a FRONT pocket. Back pocket wallets can cause all sorts of back problems because of throwing your posture off, and they are easier to pick.
5) How many ties should a man have?
As few as possible. How is it that a main part of men’s fashion is to put a noose around our neck and tighten it?
6) How many pairs of shoes should a woman have? A man?
Woman – style related – see purse answer.
Men – Dress shoes – one pair each black and brown although I usually get by with just the black, minimum one pair of sneakers (multiple styles may be in order if you are athletically inclined), one pair of work/hiking type boots (an extra pair of winter ones if you live up north), one pair of comfortable sandals (not to be used with socks under any circumstances. If your feet require socks, DON’T wear sandals).
7) How many sheet sets should a person have for their bed — just the one bed?
Minimum two so you can change the bed to launder and still have it made up. If you are inclined to illness or laundry apathy, more may be required.
8) How many pairs of sunglasses should a person have? (I live in Southern California; this is an issue. You are JUDGED by how many pairs of sunglasses you have.)
Minimum one pair per car you regularly drive plus one to keep in the house/office. If you keep to a simple neutral color style, you shouldn’t need to worry as much about the fashion component of these.
Windsor or half Windsor, Lisa?
1) How many pairs of underwear should a person have? 9. One for everyday and two spares.
2) How many bras should a woman have? (Men, unless you have an ardent opinion, you may skip this.)Depends on your activites. 2-3 regular ones, 1-2 sports, others as required, eg. strapless.
3) How many pairs of socks?5-6 trouser socks, ditto white ones.
4) How many purses should a woman have? (Men, see note above.)Three- winter, summer, dressy
5) How many ties should a man have? 5-7
6) How many pairs of shoes should a woman have? A man?
10, for women. But that includes all different seasons, plus bedroom slippers. 6-7 for men- more if you need specific athletic shoes.
7) How many sheet sets should a person have for their bed — just the one bed? 2- one on the bed, one in the linen closet.
8) How many pairs of sunglasses should a person have? (I live in Southern California; this is an issue. You are JUDGED by how many pairs of sunglasses you have.) As many as you need, I guess. I have the clip-ons, b/c I cant stand switching prescription sunglasses on and off. And I don’t use them as much as I should. In fact, I may someday have to injure my spouse as he fiddles around with his two pair, before we can get on our way.
That’s all for now. Thankee.
Cullen — /Women, sheesh … a whole bunch./ Hahahaha. You’re cute.
Patrick — You have obviously thought all these things through before. 😉
Sal — I have one purse. I know; I suck. I guess I just don’t care about purses. If I’m going to some nice affair, I just don’t take one with me or I keep “THE PURSE” hidden in the car if I need anything from it. I’ve tried having more purses and I am simply not good at purse management. I had a roommate in college once who transferred all her stuff from one purse to another on a regular basis and I just could not keep up. It made me want to weep.
1) How many pairs of underwear should a person have? I do laundry about every two weeks, so 14 + 2-3 extras in case life gets in the way of laundry.
2) How many bras should a woman have? (Men, unless you have an ardent opinion, you may skip this.) 3-4 normal ones, plus whatever for sports, strapless, etc…
3) How many pairs of socks? In the 15-20 neighborhood. Again with the laundry every two weeks, but if you wear dress socks to work and then come home and change into different socks, then that’s two pair in one day.
4) How many purses should a woman have? (Men, see note above.) I try to stay to a bare minimum on this, because matching purses to my outfit is annoying when I constantly have to be moving all my crap from one bag to another. I do not get up early enough in the day to function in this capacity. So I would go with 1-2 spring/summery purses, plus one more suitable to winter, plus the occasional clutch or whatever else designed to go with formal attire. Also, perhaps this is the place to vent my frustration at the lack of pockets in women’s dress clothing. Lines and all, I get it. But seriously, do these designers think that all women want to carry large bags of junk with them in every single situation? I used to work on political campaigns where I interacted with pretty high-level individuals and/or their staffs. I cannot tell you how many times there was an event where the Secret Service was controlling entry, and since I was staffing the event I needed to be in and out of the building multiple times throughout the day. In that situation, these are the things I need to function: cell phone, photo ID, a pen, and car keys that I have to have so I don’t lock them in the car instead. This requires a purse because none of my suits have pockets that I could put these four small things in. Having a purse means that each time I walk through the Secret Service mags, they have to stop and dig through the purse. Also, I have to not set it down somewhere and lose it, and it is permanently attached to my arm all day. Ever tried to properly arrange an American flag with hairspray and a coat hanger with a purse on one arm or a clutch in your hand? Yeah, not so much. Even an interior breast pocket on a jacket would be marvelous. Ok, rant over.
5) How many ties should a man have?
Really dependent on how often you wear them. For much of my life, my dad owned very few, because he is career military and pretty much only wore ties to church on Sunday. Now that he’s retired from the Army but still working as a physical therapist, he wears them more often. So probably anywhere from 5-12, depending.
6) How many pairs of shoes should a woman have? A man?
Women, probably 10-15, minus any specialty athletic shoes (cleats, etc…). Men, probably around 5.
7) How many sheet sets should a person have for their bed — just the one bed? 3-4, so that you can put clean sheets on once you’ve started the laundry, or in case there’s a hold up in the laundry process. This is 2 normal sets, and 1-2 sets of flannel for the winter.
8) How many pairs of sunglasses should a person have? (I live in Southern California; this is an issue. You are JUDGED by how many pairs of sunglasses you have.) I only have one. Occasionally I contemplate getting another pair, but the bottom line is that I can barely step outside during a thunderstorm without wanting to put them on, so they are ALWAYS with me, and I don’t need to store them in multiple locations.
Lisa — You went into moderation, wha?? Uhm, yes, I wear socks in Cali. With my tennis shoes only. Otherwise, no, I don’t need them.
/panty girdles/ — You mean Spanx! Spanx are awesome!
And, yeah, bra washing is a real pain. Men, do you know how we suffer??
1) How many pairs of underwear should a person have?
14 Two week supply
2) How many bras should a woman have? (Men, unless you have an ardent opinion, you may skip this.)
N/A
3) How many pairs of socks?
12 pairs (to include dress and white for workouts)… I don’t wear socks usually on a daily basis, just docksiders
4) How many purses should a woman have? (Men, see note above.) 2! Oh, and that Coach purse you just HAD to have that you’ve only used twice in 10 years… not really happy about that
5) How many ties should a man have?
Depends on whether he wears one to work… even if not, at least 6 ties for matching and variety.
6) How many pairs of shoes should a woman have? A man?
A man, four dress black and brown, 1 pair casual, 1 pair athletic (MAYBE an additional if your hobbie requires it)
7) How many sheet sets should a person have for their bed — just the one bed?
two, anything more is a waste. extra pair need in case of spills or lazy with laundry.
8) How many pairs of sunglasses should a person have? (I live in Southern California; this is an issue. You are JUDGED by how many pairs of sunglasses you have.)
Why would you need more than one pair??
Katie — Yeah, I only have one pair of sunglasses, too. I’m a pared-down kinda gal.
And what are these “flannel sheets” of which you speak??
I don’t think they even SELL them in So Cal.
Please factor in that I am not big on “shoulds”, outside of “You shouldn’t kill people needlessly” and “You shouldn’t hit your little sister” so here goes.
1) How many pairs of underwear should a person have?
I usually go commando. Me and Pioneer Woman, we’re like THIS. I have a ton of underwear though. More than I could wear if I changed it every day for an entire month. I love underwear. I just choose to skip it for the most part.
2) How many bras should a woman have? (Men, unless you have an ardent opinion, you may skip this.)
Bra-washing is the bane of my existence. I have many many many bras – but I don’t have them because of the “should” of it. I also choose not to wear them a lot, because I find them binding and uncomfortable. All of the bras I own are girlie, bright hot colors, and pretty awesome. I don’t buy cheap bras.
3) How many pairs of socks?
I have 1000 pairs of athletic socks and 1 pair of dress socks. And I never have a usable pair of nylons. I keep meaning to rectify this situation but frankly I have better things to do.
4) How many purses should a woman have? (Men, see note above.)
Oh dear. I have two. I am not a handbag kind of girl. Any purse I have must be able to carry a couple of books and a notebook, so that limits my options.
5) How many ties should a man have?
How ever many please him.
6) How many pairs of shoes should a woman have? A man?
I have a lot of shoes, but I find I rotate between my Converse sneakers and my patent leather pumps. Oh, and my hot-pink flipflops. Those are the shoes I wear. All the time. Yet I have 20 other pairs. Makes no sense, but I’m happy. And a man? I personally prefer that a man has a pair of dress shoes in his closet – but again: some men don’t care about dress shoes and don’t need them. Who am I to tell them they’re wrong?
7) How many sheet sets should a person have for their bed — just the one bed?
Because the weather where I live fluctuates so wildly – I have about 2 pairs of flannel sheets and 4 pairs of regular cotton sheets. This is the hard season for me, when I can’t decide to put away the flannel because even if it’s 90 degrees one day it could be 45 the next!
8) How many pairs of sunglasses should a person have? (I live in Southern California; this is an issue. You are JUDGED by how many pairs of sunglasses you have.)
I admit I am addicted to sunglasses. I have about 12 pairs. They each have a different personality. I love them.
1) How many pairs of underwear should a person have?
~It depends on how often you want to be forced to do laundry. I would say a minimum of two weeks worth. I have enough to go approximately 3 weeks without having to do laundry. Yes, this does occasionally happen during tax season.
2) How many bras should a woman have? (Men, unless you have an ardent opinion, you may skip this.)
~Again, this has to do with the laundry question. Also, you have function issues: strapless, sports, t-back, etc., as well as color issues: you need at least nude-ish ones and black ones. Personally, I have about 14.
3) How many pairs of socks?
~I don’t wear socks too often, so I only have about 10 pairs. Also, I have some holiday socks, for when I am feeling festive.
4) How many purses should a woman have? (Men, see note above.)
~I am terrible at changing purses. I only have one at a time (plus a tiny back-up for dressy occasions). I would love to be one of those women whose puse matches her outfit, but I have neither the money, storage space, or time to accomplish this.
5) How many ties should a man have?
~If you wear one to work, I’d say 14. If you don’t, as in my husband’s case, 1 or 2 is plenty.
6) How many pairs of shoes should a woman have? A man?
~The only limit to the number of shoes a woman should have is the size of her bank account and closet. I love shoes. I never wonder if “these shoes make me look fat.” Men need at least one pair of athletic shoes and one pair of dress shoes. If he works in an industrial job, he would need work boots also. I would add that for most men, a pair of hiking boots and a pair of sandals seems reasonable, but since my husband does not hike, and would cut off his own feet before donning a pair of sandals, this is not the case in my house.
7) How many sheet sets should a person have for their bed — just the one bed?
~At least 2…one for the bed while the laundry is going. If you live in a colder climate, an extra set of flannels for sure!
8) How many pairs of sunglasses should a person have? (I live in Southern California; this is an issue. You are JUDGED by how many pairs of sunglasses you have.)
~I have about 5, but I could totally have more! I love sunglasses! It’s the Southern California thing.
1) How many pairs of underwear should a person have?
One for everyday in between laundry runs + a couple spares for when the laundry can wait.
2) How many bras should a woman have? On to number 3
3) How many pairs of socks?
Enough to get you from one laundry to the next + some spares to cover the inevitable holes. Also, we must consider that we need to have mutliple types of socks to match our multiple type of shoes because we may wear dress socks to work but we NEVER wear dress socks with our athletic shoes and we NEVER wear athletic socks with our dress shoes. Unless of course you are really old and feed the birds at the park, then black socks with the white-velcro-strap-athletic-looking shoe is standard.
4) How many purses should a woman have? Moving on…
5) How many ties should a man have? ONE! Saved for weddings and funerals.
6) How many pairs of shoes should a woman have? A man?
Here is where I let out a little known fact about myself… one cannot have too many shoes. I love shoes. Right now I know of at least 20 pairs that I currently own. This includes my flip-flops, boots, and shoes.
7) How many sheet sets should a person have for their bed — just the one bed? Lot’s of them… we currently have one set that doesn’t have holes. Sad. Our Golden Boy sheets are holding in strong.
8) How many pairs of sunglasses should a person have? One set for the counter so you can pick them up as you run out the door and at least one set per vehicle for when you forget the pair on the counter.
Lisa – I seem to recall some conversation we had on my site where we both had the “ick” response to the word “panty” … but I can’t remember which post it was!
1) How many pairs of underwear should a person have?
–I like to have at least two weeks’ worth of all underclothing, so fourteen. But I’m not averse to more. I just get panicky when there’s LESS.
2) How many bras should a woman have?
–Fourteen. But please remember that for me, I wear $1.99 Fruit of the Loom spaghetti-strap sports bras (and could probably wear them backwards without noticeable difference), so it’s easy. If you’re like my older daughter and have to have sixty-dollar bras because you’re so well-endowed, then I can understand having a rotation of three or four. But it’s critical to have enough to rotate. Otherwise, they get worn out and stinky too soon.
3) How many pairs of socks?
–There are NEVER enough socks. Period.
4) How many purses should a woman have?
–I only have one at a time, and when I start having to duct-tape over the duct-tape on the shoulder straps, I know it’s time to switch.
5) How many ties should a man have?
–If he’s required to wear them to work, then he should have ten (the requisite two weeks’ worth). Otherwise, three or four at most is probably just fine.
6) How many pairs of shoes should a woman have?
–There are NEVER enough shoes. EVER.
A man?
–Again, as many as he likes. If he’s not a shoe-horse kinda guy, he should try to have at least three or four pairs that he can rotate through (see the “bra” answer above).
7) How many sheet sets should a person have for their bed — just the one bed?
–At least two. So you can put the other ones on while you wash the first ones. But you can get by with just one if you must.
8) How many pairs of sunglasses should a person have?
–I don’t own any, but if I lived in SoCal, I’d probably have to own at least three. Rotation, rotation, rotation, peeps.
Brian — I kinda love that you love shoes. I know that you, Sheila, and I share a love of Converse.
GraD — /(and could probably wear them backwards without noticeable difference)/ Hahahahaha. I’m sorry, GraD, but you make me laugh. It’s funny how we always wish we had the other person’s “problem.” I wouldn’t mind being able to wear the spaghetti strap bra …. I have a friend whose high school daughter wears two bras, she’s so well-endowed and self-conscious.
I guess there’s self-consciousness both ways.
JFH — Yeah! Let’s hear it for one pair of sunglasses! I need prescription sunglasses, so, fuggedaboudit. ONE PAIR.
Tracey — I *used* to have the other problem, but it was so bad that I had them reduced significantly (paid by insurance — it was that bad). My only regret with this decision is in the surgeon I chose. He left them a bit, well, square-shaped (like he cut straight across the bottom and just sewed them up like a pillowcase). TMI, no? I don’t really care that much, though. It’s nice to be able to go bra-less in the summertime now.
I would kill to wear a spaghetti-strap bra. And yes, Sheila, we have discussed our mutual hatred of the word “panty.”
1. ) How many pairs of underwear should a person have?
Fourteen of the basics. Enough for two weeks without laundering. I really only own the basics so I can’t give thoughts about thongs, bikinis, boyshorts, pants with saucy sayings on them, crotchless, any of that
2) How many bras should a woman have? (Men, unless you have an ardent opinion, you may skip this.)
I have seven of the basic ones and one or two fancier ones, including some kind of crazy strapless boned thing that I’ve worn about twice. I can see having fewer if they’re really expensive, and then washing them in the sink every night. Except I would hate doing that.
3) How many pairs of socks?
I don’t wear socks that often this time of year (too warm) but I like to have at least 5 pairs of athletic socks for workouts. I usually wear dresses or skirts to work but only wear nylons when it’s below 60 degrees outside.
4) How many purses should a woman have? (Men, see note above.)
Gah, I have no idea. I own about four. I think it depends on the woman and her lifestyle.
5) How many ties should a man have?
Men still wear ties? I never get to see that. I don’t know, three for every suit coat? And the stupid novelty ties with Shrek or something on them don’t count.
6) How many pairs of shoes should a woman have? A man?
I would say a brown pair and a black pair for men, plus athletic shoes and boots (cowboy, hiking, or motorcycle as needed). Maybe another pair of dress shoes depending. For women – again, I have no idea; I own five pairs of dressy-dressy shoes and a couple pairs of more casual shoes. Black, brown, bone, and sort of a tan
7) How many sheet sets should a person have for their bed — just the one bed?
I would say two at a minimum – one to have on and one to wash. Or three, if the bed is a child’s bed or a bed of someone with an unpredictable stomach – one to be on the bed, one in the wash, and one as back-up in case of nighttime throwing up. (I had an oogy stomach as a kid). I think I have five sheet sets but some were gifts. (Pity gifts – “Poor girl, she’s never going to get married so let’s at least give her SOME housewares”)
8) How many pairs of sunglasses should a person have? (I live in Southern California; this is an issue. You are JUDGED by how many pairs of sunglasses you have.)
I have one. But then I need prescription sunglasses, which get pricey. I don’t really care; I’m not going to judge someone’s worth based on sunglass ownership unless you’re starving your family to support your sunglass habit or something
These quizzes are genius, you know? It’s amazing what one learns about friends.
1) How many pairs of underwear should a person have?
I have about 20 – a half-dozen boxers and the rest those boxer/briefs. I’m hip to the trends of six years ago! But they’re very comfy. I have the extras for hockey purposes; I can’t wear them home from games, it’s awful.
2) How many bras should a woman have? (Men, unless you have an ardent opinion, you may skip this.)
That depends how comfortable you ladies are. I do enough laundry to hazard a guess at my Ladybug’s supply, but that info is confidential.
3) How many pairs of socks?
I am a sock addict. I have about eight pairs of calf-high whites, another six of the ankle-high for games and summer weather… maybe six pairs of nicer socks for church and important work meetings. (Normally I can just wear sneaks and whites because of the nature of the job, so I don’t need lots and lots of good socks.)
4) How many purses should a woman have? (Men, see note above.)
Sorry… I hear the Spider from waaay back in college, counseling me on ComSec. He’s right.
5) How many ties should a man have?
I have ten. Should I have more? I never run out. Back in my waitering days, though, I got so tired of catching every possible stain with my tie, I went old-school bow tie. Never ruined another one.
6) How many pairs of shoes should a woman have? A man?
I spent most of my life with a pair of sneakers and a pair of Sunday shoes, and that was it. Now I have casuals, and summer shoes, and the sneaks, and the formals, and a pair of sandals, and pool/beach shoes that you can just wear in the water if you’re worried about stepping on something unpleasant. It’s a little annoying trying to keep up with it all. Include the old sneaks for painting and other dirty jobs, and I feel like some plutocrat bastard. “A pair of shoes for every day of the week! What, is he the Monopoly dude? Here’s a top hat and a monocle, Your Highness!”
None of this applies to women, of course, who require a bewildering amount of specific class and color of shoe, for any possible situation, however unlikely.
7) How many sheet sets should a person have for their bed — just the one bed?
We only have two, which is just fine, but I do prefer a third for emergencies. We’ll get there.
8) How many pairs of sunglasses should a person have? (I live in Southern California; this is an issue. You are JUDGED by how many pairs of sunglasses you have.)
I have two, my ladyfair has three.
ricki — /pants with saucy sayings on them/ Hahahaha.
Lisa and Sheila — Yes! The word “panty” is horrible, horrifying. I hate it. I won’t use it. I’d rather say “drawers” than that. Banish it forever.
NF — /I have the extras for hockey purposes; I can’t wear them home from games, it’s awful./
This is going to plague me all day. I want to ask, but at the same time, feel like I shouldn’t. Plus, I feel like there’s some obvious explanation for this that I should already KNOW …. but I don’t so …. okay, I’m not asking … I’m not.
GraD — The upside of your pillows is that you will never develop what MB calls “knee-shooters.”
Aha. This is what I get for trying to answer past my bedtime. A simple undergarments and accessories meme becomes an explosive, white-knuckle thrill ride.
I won’t plague you. What I mean is that after games (and especially if I play a double and then have to run around reffing), I’m pretty much down five pounds of sweat. I have to shower and change and all, no matter how tired I am. So the extras are what I change INTO because the originals are awful. Although you didn’t ask, I can say that I have t-shirts to supply an entire pro football team, including the coaches and trainers, precisely because of this – and half of them are unwearable for any other purpose even after laundering. I can’t toss them because I don’t want to ruin good t-shirts, so I have a stash.
Really, at this point I should just post a picture of my closet. WAAAAY more than you all bargained on learning.
Okay. See, Trace? Sweat. It was obvious. Dur.
But thank you for your indulgence, NF.
1) How many pairs of underwear should a person have?
Thirty. You don’t have to do laundry as often.
2) How many bras should a woman have? (Men, unless you have an ardent opinion, you may skip this.)
At least one. At most five. Excluding ones used for bowchickabowwow purposes.
3) How many pairs of socks?
I’m not the person to ask, because I horde these. Even the solos. I can’t bear to throw them out just in case I come across their mates when I move to another house or something.
4) How many purses should a woman have? (Men, see note above.)
One. But then, I hate purses and their necessity.
5) How many ties should a man have?
Five great ones. No preacher ties. And at least one whimsy one.
6) How many pairs of shoes should a woman have? A man?
I hate shoes and their necessity almost as much as I hate purses. I max out at six or seven.
7) How many sheet sets should a person have for their bed — just the one bed?
Three. I only have two.
8) How many pairs of sunglasses should a person have? (I live in Southern California; this is an issue. You are JUDGED by how many pairs of sunglasses you have.)
I have zero pairs. Had magnetic clipons for my glasses in Florida, because I’m a fashion nightmare. Now I have transitions lenses that turn into shades when I go out in the sun. I suppose a person should have at least one pair.
Bringing up the rear (rear! how appropriate!). . .
1) How many pairs of underwear should a person have?
I don’t know about how many pairs (I guess at least enough to tide you over till laundry day?) but I know as a lady I have to have a couple different *styles*.
2) How many bras should a woman have? (Men, unless you have an ardent opinion, you may skip this.)
I don’t think anybody mentioned this but I live in fear that the bra that actually fits the best will stop being manufactured–and in fact it did happen to me–that, and the laundering bit I agree is a pain in the tush–so I’d say buy as many as you can afford and fit in your bureau drawer. Oh, and don’t forget a sports bra or two.
3) How many pairs of socks?
I kinda feel the same way as I do about undies–as many as you need until laundry day, but also different styles. I have dress ones and workout ones.
4) How many purses should a woman have? (Men, see note above.)
Because purses should go with what you wear most of the time–I’d say at least two. I also have a couple different sizes because I don’t like carrying a huge one if I don’t have to (e.g. the checkbook can stay at home).
5) How many ties should a man have?
If he wears one to work every day, at least six or so. If only to church or other special events, at least four. Of course, if he’s a dad and he gets one every year from the kids for Christmas or something, he’s allowed to have as many as they give him!
6) How many pairs of shoes should a woman have? A man?
This goes with my purse theory. You need as many as can go with your clothes and are appropriate for the occasion. That’s gonna vary.
7) How many sheet sets should a person have for their bed — just the one bed?
At least two so you can change/launder. And the flannel users should double that.
8) How many pairs of sunglasses should a person have? (I live in Southern California; this is an issue. You are JUDGED by how many pairs of sunglasses you have.)
I’d say it depends on where you live, but generally at least one “good” pair and a back-up pair. I think I have at least two back-ups in my car, along with the good pair. Ever since I started wearing contacts, I love wearing sunglasses. I mean, I need them in any event, but they’re much easier to buy and wear than prescription ones were.
