tracey’s breakfast survey

Just a wee nosy survey I worked up because I like breakfast. The whole ritual of it. The robotic routine of it. Or sometimes just vulnerability of being barely awake and eating with others. In some ways, I think it’s the most no-holds-barred meal of the day.

Anyhoo.

Copy and paste the questions into the comments. That way everyone can follow your answers better.

1) Do you usually eat breakfast?

2) If yes, what do you eat?

3) Choose one: Coffee or tea?

7) Do you like to go out to breakfast?

8) If yes, do you have a place you really like to go?

9) What’s your favorite thing to order when you’re there?

25) We all know The Breakfast Club. So confess. Were you ever part of a “breakfast club”?

Stayed tuned for more versions of Tracey’s Breakfast Survey. I think I’ve only begun to scratch the surface. Yes. Of breakfast.

SO AS.

** I’m realizing this may be obscure. Okay. Quisp and Quake were Cap’n Crunch-like cereals. Quisp had flying saucer-shaped crunchies; Quake had rubble-shaped crunchies. Here’s a picture of the boxes:
quispquake.jpg
Now they were identical in taste to Cap’n Crunch — identical — but they created a polarizing frenzy in my neck of the woods. You were either a Quisp kid or a Quake kid. There was no middle ground. You could not equivocate. You HAD to choose a side. And the Quispers hated the Quakers (which sounds wrong; forgive me, O Lord) and the Quakers hated the Quispers. Rabid, sugar-high bunch of cerealists. It was all very primal and dangerous and could very well have led to a hideous Lord of the Flies scenario on my school playground. (Some of the young-uns won’t know this one.) I am the only one who remembers them, though?? ACK.

Or the three breakfast scenes in “Citizen Kane” that depict the breakdown of his marriage
Or the non-breakfast scene in “The Lady Eve”, where Eugene Pallette can’t get any service b/ct they’re all rushing around about the wedding, reducing him to banging on the table with the dishes.
Or Dame Maggie Smith examining her breakfast tray in ‘Gosford Park’: “Oh. Bought marmalade. I call that very feeble.”

    23) When you were a kid — or even now: What about that colored milk you get after you eat Trix or Fruit Loops or something; to drink or not to drink? I try not to eat foods that are a color not found in nature

    24) Did you and your siblings fight over the prizes in boxes of cereal? No, which is odd, because there were five of us. I guess we all liked different things.

    25) We all know The Breakfast Club. So confess. Were you ever part of a “breakfast club”? Once, in high school. But I think the infraction actually belonged to a gal with the same last name, first name first initial. I was too chicken to contest it, though.

  5. 1) Do you usually eat breakfast? Yes, I don’t think my body can function without it.

    2) If yes, what do you eat? A bowl of cheerios or oatmeal with fruit.

    3) Choose one: Coffee or tea? Coffee

    4) If you drink coffee, how do you drink it? Black, cream, sugar? With cream – I just started drinking it without sugar.

    8) If yes, do you have a place you really like to go? The best breakfast food I’ve found is at Reedville Cafe in Hillsboro, OR.

    9) What’s your favorite thing to order when you’re there? Omelet or biscuits and gravy.

    10) How do you like your eggs? Over-easy. I like to dunk the toast in the yolk.

    11) What do you put on your pancakes? Regular syrup.

    12) If you eat oatmeal, what do put on that? Fruit – banana, blueberries or strawberries.

    13) Do you like breakfast pastries — danish, bear claws, etc.? Not my favorite.

    14) What about muffins? Good or bad? Like or dislike? Depends on the muffin. A good banana-nut or pumpkin one makes me happy.

    15) Choose one: bacon or sausage? I like both, but would choose bacon over sausage.

    16) How do you like your bacon? Crispy – I don’t like chewing fatty fat.

    17) On sausage: Link or patty? Patty

    18) Choose one: Quisp or Quake? (Some of the young-uns won’t know this one.) I’m not young, but I’m not sure what this is.

    19) For anyone who likes raisin bran, who makes a better one: Kellogg’s or Post? Post

    20) Does ketchup belong on the breakfast table? Sure, with potatoes. As a kid I ate my scrambled eggs with ketchup.

    21) What about salsa? Same question. Love salsa on my scrambled eggs.

    22) Name a movie breakfast scene you particularly like or remember. I honestly can’t think of one right now. I guess someone eating breakfast in a movie isn’t that memorable to me.

    23) When you were a kid — or even now: What about that colored milk you get after you eat Trix or Fruit Loops or something; to drink or not to drink? I wasn’t allowed to get sugared cereal, unless my step-siblings were over. Not enough times to remember. The only thing with sugared cereal I really remember is how Captain Crunch would make the roof of my mouth raw.

    24) Did you and your siblings fight over the prizes in boxes of cereal? Nope

    25) We all know The Breakfast Club. So confess. Were you ever part of a “breakfast club”? Nope, I was boring in high school too.

  6. Marisa — I love the CAPS. It’s like you’re yelling your breakfast preferences at me and I am dying over here! Hahaha!

Jeannine — Oooh. There’s an Original Pancake House farther south than Poway — closer to me. We go there ALL THE TIME. Love it. They have these crepes I love ….

Sal — Somehow I knew it was you from your very first answer. (Little game I’m playing with myself here.) Also — uhm, your house is absolutely the place to be for breakfast. Good LORD! The description just got mouthwateringer and mouthwateringer. (Let’s just pretend those are words. I coulda said “more and more mouthwatering,” but .. eh.)

  7. Brian — We like our eggs the same way. Either scrambled or over medium. But … well, I like me the Benedict, too. Especially my mother-in-law’s. Oh, yum.

  8. Oh. So I decided to take my own survey here:

    1) Do you usually eat breakfast?

Uhm, not every day. But we go to breakfast every Saturday — every Saturday of our marriage, no matter what — and I am always chompin’ at the bit to go. Love it.

    2) If yes, what do you eat?

    3) Choose one: Coffee or tea?

    Well, coffee, generally.

    4) If you drink coffee, how do you drink it? Black, cream, sugar?

It may sound weird, seeing as how I had a coffeehouse and all, but I use non-dairy creamer and a tiny bit of sweetener. Creamer keeps the coffee hot longer. 😉

    5) If you drink tea, how do you drink it?

I love going to tea, afternoon tea. There are a couple of great places for that here. And so when I’m doing that, I take cream and a teeny bit of sugar. Yum.

    6) Choose one: Oatmeal or Cream of Wheat?

I eat oatmeal more often. But Cream of Wheat, wow. I literally had some Cream of Wheat for dinner the other night. It’s so nostalgic, like Kathi said.

    7) Do you like to go out to breakfast? YES! Let’s all go. NOW!

    8) If yes, do you have a place you really like to go?

MB and I have a rotation of places for our Sat. morning breakfasts so we don’t get bored with any one place. This has taken YEARS of trial and error to find our places, but it’s totally worth it. Right now, Sat. morning is spent at a little place near the pier in Ocean Beach. We watch the waves, the surfers, all the dogs, plot which dogs to dognap. (Okay. Maybe I just do that one.)

    9) What’s your favorite thing to order when you’re there?

Oh, the scrambled eggs and bacon. But they give you an English muffin and a wee bowl of fruit. Delicious. A perfect combo of everything.

    10) How do you like your eggs? Scrambled or over medium, as I said.

    11) What do you put on your pancakes?

Well, butter, little bit o’ maple syrup and also some kind of blackberry or raspberry jam. Just a little bit on the plate to dip the bite in.

    12) If you eat oatmeal, what do put on that?

Well, I’m sure I completely cancel out the heath benefits of oatmeal with this but … okay … when I eat it? Half ‘n’ half and brown sugar. Lower that cholesterol, Trace.

    13) Do you like breakfast pastries — danish, bear claws, etc.? I like an occasional donut more.

    14) What about muffins? Good or bad? Like or dislike? Not a fan of the muffin. I don’t really get it.

    15) Choose one: bacon or sausage? Bacon.

    16) How do you like your bacon? Crispy. I don’t wanna have to work at it like a dog with a chew toy.

    17) On sausage: Link or patty?

Uhm, link. Although it does disturb me sometimes when you go to cut it … you know … with the side of your fork and it kind of … pops up for a moment? Like it’s very excited sausage? Know what I mean? Ya feel me, dawg? And because I am impossibly immature, if I’m in a restaurant and my sausage gets excited, I have to steal a glance around me to see if anybody saw my sausage do that. Because if they did, well, I just couldn’t bear it. It’s totally insane. I can’t even believe I’m talking about it, frankly.

    18) Choose one: Quisp or Quake? **

I was a loyal Quisp girl because I thought he was cute and because the box said it would give me “quazy energy.” It did not. Plus, the Quake dude, like, what UP? He’s a miner with a cape and Pilgrim shoes. I was right to be creeped out by him. Good job, little Tracey.

    19) For anyone who likes raisin bran, who makes a better one: Kellogg’s or Post?

Kellog’s. I like their flakes better. They’re not so … robust. They’re prettier and easier on me dentures.

    20) Does ketchup belong on the breakfast table? Sure. On MB’s side.

    21) What about salsa? Same question. Same answer. I love salsa, but I’m usually not awake enough to enjoy it at breakfast. Plus, I’m too busy being worried about me dentures whilst eating raisin bran, apparently.

    22) Name a movie breakfast scene you particularly like or remember.

You all have already named some great ones — ones I might have likely said. So I’m gonna go with “Groundhog Day.” Haven’t seen it in a long while, but doesn’t he basically start chowing down at breakfast, eating whatever? Milkshakes and ice cream and drinking coffee straight from the carafe at the table? Because he’s just going to live the day over again it doesn’t matter? I think I’m remembering it. Love that movie. I need to see it again.

    23) When you were a kid — or even now: What about that colored milk you get after you eat Trix or Fruit Loops or something; to drink or not to drink?

We were supposed to drink it. That was the rule if we ate a colored sugar cereal. But we always waited til parents were gone from the room and dumped it. Bad chillens.

    24) Did you and your siblings fight over the prizes in boxes of cereal? Oh, yes! There was many a bitter howling at our breakfast table.

    25) We all know The Breakfast Club. So confess. Were you ever part of a “breakfast club”? No. And dammit anyway. I feel less somehow.

  9. You answered your own survey and I didn’t have to dare you! 😉

    1) Do you usually eat breakfast? Yes; I get fuzzy-headed if I don’t.

    2) If yes, what do you eat? Lately it’s been a “rediscovery” of cereal since I found that almond milk is the most inoffensive-tasting, most similar consistency to the 2% milk I grew up on but now know I’m severely allergic to. There was a bad experience with rice milk along the way.

    3) Choose one: Coffee or tea? If it’s with breakfast, coffee.

    4) If you drink coffee, how do you drink it? Black, cream, sugar? Black and burning hot. If it drops below a certain temp I don’t like it.

    5) If you drink tea, how do you drink it? N/A for breakfast. My parents are tea fiends, however.

    6) Choose one: Oatmeal or Cream of Wheat? Oatmeal; my parents love cream of wheat but the texture is “ick” for me.

    7) Do you like to go out to breakfast? Love it.

    8) If yes, do you have a place you really like to go? Any decent diner will do. Nothing fancy. Remember the Friendly’s discussion?

    9) What’s your favorite thing to order when you’re there? OJ, eggs, rye toast (dry), bacon, and homefries. It’s called the Super Big To-Do at Friendly’s (without homefries it’s just a Big To-Do; if you’re my mom, it’s a “Whoop-Ti-Do”–she’s so darn giddy after church sometimes).

    10) How do you like your eggs? Scrambled, as long as there’s no milk added. Otherwise, sunny side up.

    11) What do you put on your pancakes? It’s rare I eat them, but if they’re allergen-free I use Log Cabin. There used to be a syrup called Golden Griddle (jokingly called “Golden Girdle” in my house, the sickos) that we were loyal to b/c my aunt worked for Best Foods until they were bought out. Not that you asked, but Karo goes on french toast.

    12) If you eat oatmeal, what do put on that? Bananas (if I have them), maybe a little maple syrup, maybe a little vegan butter, a splash of soy milk. But that M & M’s thing sounds awesome.

    13) Do you like breakfast pastries — danish, bear claws, etc.? I kind of lost interest b/c of my allergies, but I miss the sticky buns from the bakery that used to be near my parents’ house. No white icing, just good brown goo.

    14) What about muffins? Good or bad? Like or dislike? Hard to find good allergy free ones, but I made some awesome s’mores ones for Christmas this year and even my family had to admit they were good.

    15) Choose one: bacon or sausage? If I must choose, bacon.

    16) How do you like your bacon? Cooked but not burnt.

    17) On sausage: Link or patty? Links. In spite of Miz T’s phall-link story. The patties seem to turn out too dry and smoky for my taste.

    18) Choose one: Quisp or Quake? I don’t remember Quake but I think we did like Quisp. Most of the time that kind of cereal was a treat, and you were more likely to find Chex in our cabinet.

    19) For anyone who likes raisin bran, who makes a better one: Kellogg’s or Post? Post, hands down.

    20) Does ketchup belong on the breakfast table? Only for homefries.

    21) What about salsa? Same question. I don’t need it but I wouldn’t hassle anybody else about it. My brother likes tabasco on his eggs.

    22) Name a movie breakfast scene you particularly like or remember. Like Brian–Uncle Buck making giant pancakes for Miles’ birthday. And the final scene in Moonstruck: “Yes, Mrs. Castorini, I would love some oatmeal.”

    23) When you were a kid — or even now: What about that colored milk you get after you eat Trix or Fruit Loops or something; to drink or not to drink? That was an option? We didn’t dare waste ANYTHING in my parents’ house. I don’t drink the leftover almond milk nowadays b/c it’s just not quite the same thing.

    24) Did you and your siblings fight over the prizes in boxes of cereal? Are you kidding? It got so bad my mom would fish them out in advance and hide them, or send away for a couple more to make it even. I think at one point the house was overrun with wacky wallwalkers.

    25) We all know The Breakfast Club. So confess. Were you ever part of a “breakfast club”? Sort of, if you count being one of the few losers in college who got up for breakfast when I was a freshman.

  10. Yay, breakfast!

    1) Do you usually eat breakfast?

    Always, always, always.

    2) If yes, what do you eat?

Usually cereal. Granola is a favorite. I also like some of those shredded-wheat things. Or Cheerios.

    3) Choose one: Coffee or tea?

Tea, except I generally don’t drink it at breakfast because I’m too energetic in the mornings as it is, and me + tea tends to be too scary a combination for the early morning students.

    4) If you drink coffee, how do you drink it? Black, cream, sugar?

    n/a. I don’t care for coffee.

    5) If you drink tea, how do you drink it?

Usually plain. If it’s chai, with milk and sugar.

    6) Choose one: Oatmeal or Cream of Wheat?

Cream of Wheat. With maple syrup in it.

    7) Do you like to go out to breakfast?

I love to but I never have time, and there aren’t any good breakfast restaurants here.

    8) If yes, do you have a place you really like to go?

When I’m visiting my parents, there’s a very old-skool Greek-run diner where we like to go.

    9) What’s your favorite thing to order when you’re there?

    Belgian waffles or an omelet.

    10) How do you like your eggs?

Poached, if they’re very fresh. Scrambled, if they’re just average-fresh.

    11) What do you put on your pancakes?

Usually, maple syrup. (The real kind. Not the kind that’s “maple flavored.”)

    12) If you eat oatmeal, what do put on that?

Usually brown sugar, but sometimes I cook it with raisins in it instead.

    13) Do you like breakfast pastries — danish, bear claws, etc.?

Yes, but they generally don’t like me. Too much sugar too early.

    14) What about muffins? Good or bad? Like or dislike?

I like muffins. Except for banana muffins.

    15) Choose one: bacon or sausage?

    Bacon, please.

    16) How do you like your bacon?

oooo. Really really crispy. Just this side of burnt. Mmmm, bacon.

    17) On sausage: Link or patty?

Surprisingly, I am not picky on this matter.

    18) Choose one: Quisp or Quake? **

I am actually quite old (nearly 39) and yet neither of those cereals are ones I remember eating as a child. (My mother was pretty strict; we got Cheerios or Post Toasties or Raisin Bran. Sometimes, for a treat, there were Lucky Charms, but these were old-style, less-marshmallowy-than-today’s-variety Lucky Charms.

    19) For anyone who likes raisin bran, who makes a better one: Kellogg’s or Post?

I….actually….don’t know. I guess I’m going to go with Post because that’s what we had when I was a child and what I usually buy now.

    20) Does ketchup belong on the breakfast table?

You’re welcome to have it if you want, but I won’t be using it.

    21) What about salsa? Same question.

Same response as #20. I’m a “big tent” breakfast person. You could eat eyeballs for all I care, just let me have my cereal or wheat toast with jam and don’t ask me to eat what you’re eating.

    22) Name a movie breakfast scene you particularly like or remember.

Ah, me, I don’t know. The one where the guy squishes the half-grapefruit on the woman’s face?

    23) When you were a kid — or even now: What about that colored milk you get after you eat Trix or Fruit Loops or something; to drink or not to drink?

    Shudder. No. Do Not Want.

    24) Did you and your siblings fight over the prizes in boxes of cereal?

I was five years older so I usually got the goodies.

    25) We all know The Breakfast Club. So confess. Were you ever part of a “breakfast club”?

No, not really. (No, wait – my senior year French class, the teacher lived close to campus and a couple times a month he’d have everyone come over for cafe au lait and pastries with him and his wife. And milk for me, because coffee upset my stomach. I think he thought I was being rather tiresome, always asking for “lait sans cafe”)

  11. 1) Do you usually eat breakfast?
I wouldn’t call it breakfast. I usually eat junkfood in the morning; something with sugar to wake me up.

    2) If yes, what do you eat?
candy bars, soda, leftover pizza from yesterday, etc.

    3) Choose one: Coffee or tea?
    Coffee

    4) If you drink coffee, how do you drink it? Black, cream, sugar?
    half-&-half, a little sugar

    5) If you drink tea, how do you drink it?
    I dislike tea.

    6) Choose one: Oatmeal or Cream of Wheat?
    Oatmeal!

    7) Do you like to go out to breakfast?
    I love it.

    8) If yes, do you have a place you really like to go?
There is this place that used to be in Wildwood, NJ called The Tomcat; a perfect little diner.

    9) What’s your favorite thing to order when you’re there?
short stack, extra bacon, sausages, toast, homefries, fresh orange juice, fried eggs

    10) How do you like your eggs?
    over easy

    11) What do you put on your pancakes?
maple or blueberry syrup and butter

    12) If you eat oatmeal, what do put on that?
    brown sugar, butter, and pecans

    13) Do you like breakfast pastries — danish, bear claws, etc.?
    Surely!

    14) What about muffins? Good or bad? Like or dislike?
I like blueberry muffins, that’s about all.

    15) Choose one: bacon or sausage?
    BACON

    16) How do you like your bacon?
    crispy

    17) On sausage: Link or patty?
    links

    18) Choose one: Quisp or Quake? **
    Quisp!

    19) For anyone who likes raisin bran, who makes a better one: Kellogg’s or Post?
I’ve never eaten Post, so I’ll say Kellogg’s.

    20) Does ketchup belong on the breakfast table?
-maybe for the homefries. Or the scrambled eggs if you’re 10 and under.

    21) What about salsa? Same question.
    -NO WAY

    22) Name a movie breakfast scene you particularly like or remember.
-The one in Unckle Buck, where he turns the giant pancakes over with a snow shovel. lol

    23) When you were a kid — or even now: What about that colored milk you get after you eat Trix or Fruit Loops or something; to drink or not to drink?
-No, I’d dump it in the sink, even back then.

    24) Did you and your siblings fight over the prizes in boxes of cereal?
    -Yes, LOL

    25) We all know The Breakfast Club. So confess. Were you ever part of a “breakfast club”?
    -Sure wasn’t.

  12. OH MY GOSH Kate P! The Moonstruck breakfast is a classic! Totally an excellent call.

Also – The Big Chill. The scene where everyone gets up at different times and you just see them coming into and out of the kitchen in different groups and making cereal and coffee and chatting and whatever and then Jeff Goldblum comes in – very late – and this exchange takes place beetween him and Glenn Close:

Michael: [enters the kitchen, sees Sarah standing in front of the open refrigerator] You know, that’s the problem with these things. You have to watch them every minute.

Michael: Oh, hey, did I miss Karen and Richard?

Sarah: No, just Richard; Karen’s staying for the weekend.

    Michael: But not Richard?

Sarah: Went back to be with the kids.

Michael: Oohhhh, interesting. What did Richard have to say about that?

Sarah: Michael, if you’re going to sleep this late, you’re going to miss a few minidramas.

Michael: I just hope you’ll wake me for anything really ugly.

  13. I apologize if someone already said this – I haven’t read comments because I want to answer the questions with no outside influence – but that Quake dude looks like a bit player from Rocky and Bullwinkle. I’m trying to picture his fictional IMDB page:

    1984: QUAKE cereal…the Miner
1979: Tootsie Roll commercial…Mr. Turtle (voice)
    1977: Scooby-Doo…1 episode
… “The Disoriented Express” – Train Conductor

    …so, to the quiz.

    1) Do you usually eat breakfast? About half the days.

    2) If yes, what do you eat? Bagels are good, or a piece of fruit. Oatmeal when I have time to sit.

    3) Choose one: Coffee or tea? Coffee, but I have to stick to decaf now. I have a sadness.

    4) If you drink coffee, how do you drink it? Black, cream, sugar? A little cream and sugar. I can skip either if I have to, but strangely, not both. Have to have one or the other. Frankly I think I’m a kook.

    5) If you drink tea, how do you drink it? Honey, no milk – unless I’m unwell, then I usually soften it with some milk to be easier on my throat.

    6) Choose one: Oatmeal or Cream of Wheat? Oatmeal.

    7) Do you like to go out to breakfast? Yes – after Mass a bunch of us will go once in a while, or I’ll treat the Ladybug to a brunch at one of our favorite places ever. The company is essential, though.

    8) If yes, do you have a place you really like to go? In NJ we have diners, and they’re all good for a good breakfast. I also like Le Peep.

    9) What’s your favorite thing to order when you’re there? Le Peep does these skillet breakfasts that are tremendous. Otherwise I’m an over easy-hash brown-sausage sort of guy.

    10) How do you like your eggs? Still over easy, just like last question.

    11) What do you put on your pancakes? Butter, a little syrup (but not sopping fountains of the stuff).

    12) If you eat oatmeal, what do put on that? Again, a little honey – or maybe maybe some sliced banana – but that’s it.

    13) Do you like breakfast pastries — danish, bear claws, etc.? Eh. Not too much. I can deal with a cheese danish as a rarity.

    14) What about muffins? Good or bad? Like or dislike? In general, I can skip them. Dunkin’s makes good ones, though.

    15) Choose one: bacon or sausage? Sausage.

    16) How do you like your bacon? Crispy, not burnt.

    17) On sausage: Link or patty? I like the oomphy plump ones. But I have no preference otherwise, if it’s sausage I can dig it.

    18) Choose one: Quisp or Quake? ** I’ve played “Quake” but I’ve never heard of that cereal. I have heard of Quisp, but the mascot gives me the blinking fantods so I have never eaten the stuff. (Dude has a beanie propeller coming straight from his skull – no beanie, just the propeller. Way creepy.

    19) For anyone who likes raisin bran, who makes a better one: Kellogg’s or Post? I am ashamed to say, I’ve never been able to tell a difference.

    20) Does ketchup belong on the breakfast table? It depends. Certain hash browns, and the Jersey Special (pork roll, egg, and cheese on a Kaiser roll) are acceptably ketchupped.

    21) What about salsa? Same question. One of Le Peep’s skillets has it, and it’s not bad, so I’m open-minded about it.

    22) Name a movie breakfast scene you particularly like or remember. You know, I can’t think of one. In fact, it’s one of the reasons why the Mother of Unfinishable Stories opens at a diner during breakfast – I felt like I was filling a need.

    23) When you were a kid — or even now: What about that colored milk you get after you eat Trix or Fruit Loops or something; to drink or not to drink? Drink.

    24) Did you and your siblings fight over the prizes in boxes of cereal? Nope. My siblings are way younger than I am so it was never an issue.

    25) We all know The Breakfast Club. So confess. Were you ever part of a “breakfast club”? No. We had afternoon detentions, not Saturdays (as far as I know). But if I had been, I would have been Brian. Easily.

  14. 1) Do you usually eat breakfast? YES

    2) If yes, what do you eat? CURRENTLY ON A CHEERIOS-MIXED-WITH-BRAN-FLAKES-AND-RAISINS KICK

    3) Choose one: Coffee or tea? TEA, DEFINITELY

    4) If you drink coffee, how do you drink it? Black, cream, sugar? N/A

    5) If you drink tea, how do you drink it? SUGAR AND POWDERED CREAMER. NOT CREAM, NOT HALF AND HALF, POWDERED CREAMER. NO ACCOUNTING FOR TASTES.

    6) Choose one: Oatmeal or Cream of Wheat? HMM. RARELY DO EITHER NOW–USED TO DO BOTH A LOT. ON FREQUENCY, OATMEAL PROBABLY WINS BY A NOSE.

    7) Do you like to go out to breakfast? YES

    8) If yes, do you have a place you really like to go? YES

    9) What’s your favorite thing to order when you’re there? TOUGH CHOICE, BUT THEY MAKE A MUSHROOM OMELETTE TO DIE FOR

    10) How do you like your eggs? 1ST CHOICE: OVER EASY. 2ND CHOICE: SCRAMBLED

    11) What do you put on your pancakes? NEVER EAT ‘EM ANY MORE–I’M MILDLY HYPOGLYCEMIC, SO THEY’RE A NO-NO. USED TO BE BUTTER AND SYRUP

    12) If you eat oatmeal, what do put on that? MILK AND BROWN SUGAR

    13) Do you like breakfast pastries — danish, bear claws, etc.? USED TO LOVE ‘EM. BUT THERE’S THAT HYPOGLYCEMIA THING. . .

    14) What about muffins? Good or bad? Like or dislike? DITTO. BUT I UNDERSTAND THOSE LOVELY GIANT MUFFINS ARE LOADED WITH ABOUT HALF A DAY’S SUPPLY OF CALORIES AND FAT

    15) Choose one: bacon or sausage? TOUGH CALL, BUT SAUSAGE BY A NOSE

    16) How do you like your bacon? CRISPY

    17) On sausage: Link or patty? 50-50

    18) Choose one: Quisp or Quake? **NEVER HEARD OF ‘EM

    19) For anyone who likes raisin bran, who makes a better one: Kellogg’s or Post? KELLOGG’S

    20) Does ketchup belong on the breakfast table? NOT MINE

    21) What about salsa? Same question. NO, UNLESS TABASCO COUNTS. TABASCO, DEFINITELY, FOR EGGS-HASH BROWNS-AND TOAST, A FAVORITE WHEN ON THE ROAD. ALMOST ANYPLACE CAN DO THEM DECENTLY.

    22) Name a movie breakfast scene you particularly like or remember. DRAWING A BLANK

    23) When you were a kid — or even now: What about that colored milk you get after you eat Trix or Fruit Loops or something; to drink or not to drink? SORRY, DIDN’T EAT THAT KIND OF CEREAL.

    24) Did you and your siblings fight over the prizes in boxes of cereal? PROBABLY, BUT NONE LEFT ANY SEARING MEMORIES

    25) We all know The Breakfast Club. So confess. Were you ever part of a “breakfast club”? NOPE

  15. Hahaha! I got almost everyone to “yell” breakfast preferences at you! 😉

Dude, how does everyone not feel that the link is infinitely superior to the patty?

  16. 1) Do you usually eat breakfast?

    Yes.

    2) If yes, what do you eat?

A South Beach protein bar. 19 grams of protein, 4 WW points.

    3) Choose one: Coffee or tea?

    Hot? Coffee. Iced? Tea.

    4) If you drink coffee, how do you drink it? Black, cream, sugar?

    Black.

    5) If you drink tea, how do you drink it?

    Unsweetened.

    6) Choose one: Oatmeal or Cream of Wheat?

    Oatmeal.

    7) Do you like to go out to breakfast?

Yes. In fact I PREFER to have my breakfast in restaurants.

    8) If yes, do you have a place you really like to go?

    Cracker Barrel, or Waffle House.

    9) What’s your favorite thing to order when you’re there?

At Cracker Barrel, hashbrown casserole and French toast made with sourdough bread. At Waffle House, pecan waffles.

    10) How do you like your eggs?

    Scrambled.

    11) What do you put on your pancakes?

    I don’t eat pancakes.

    12) If you eat oatmeal, what do put on that?

    Butter and sugar.

    13) Do you like breakfast pastries — danish, bear claws,
    etc.?

    Sure, I guess.

    14) What about muffins? Good or bad? Like or dislike?

Like my hero Elaine Benes, I only like the top.

    15) Choose one: bacon or sausage?

    Bacon.

    16) How do you like your bacon?

    Cooked, but not too crispy.

    17) On sausage: Link or patty?

    Patty.

    18) Choose one: Quisp or Quake? **

I AM old enough to remember these, but I only remember that Quisp was sold in Illinois. I knew Quake existed, from the commercials, but I never remember seeing it in the stores.

    19) For anyone who likes raisin bran, who makes a better one: Kellogg’s or Post?

    I don’t like raisins.

    20) Does ketchup belong on the breakfast table?

    Good heavens, no.

    21) What about salsa? Same question.

    Only on huevos rancheros.

    22) Name a movie breakfast scene you particularly like or remember.

I can’t think of one other than that movie where Jimmy Cagney smears a grapefruit in some chick’s face.

    23) When you were a kid — or even now: What about that colored milk you get after you eat Trix or Fruit Loops or something; to drink or not to drink?

I don’t put milk on my cereal. (See: Pancakes)

    24) Did you and your siblings fight over the prizes in boxes of cereal?

Yes. So much that my mom started refusing to buy the cereals that came with prizes.

    25) We all know The Breakfast Club. So confess. Were you ever part of a “breakfast club”?

    No.

  17. NF — You’re right about the Quisp dude! I never noticed that. And I was such a Quisp kid, too, because the Quake dude freaked me out. Now I’m rethinking everything!

And I’m wondering if the whole Quisp/Quake frenzy was really a regional thing.

  18. I love a survey!

    1) Do you usually eat breakfast? 50/50

    2) If yes, what do you eat? Various things…variety is the spice of life after all!

    3) Choose one: Coffee or tea? Tea

    4) If you drink coffee, how do you drink it? Black, cream, sugar? With Baileys…which is why a don’t drink it too often. Funny how they frown on that at work.

    5) If you drink tea, how do you drink it? Usually iced, but if it is hot, with honey

    6) Choose one: Oatmeal or Cream of Wheat? Oatmeal

    7) Do you like to go out to breakfast? YES! It makes me feel like I’m on vacation.

    8) If yes, do you have a place you really like to go? Not really…that is the bummer. No good places near me.

    9) What’s your favorite thing to order when you’re there? I like to order skillet breakfasts, but no one near me has them anymore.

    10) How do you like your eggs? Over easy

    11) What do you put on your pancakes? Peanut butter and maple syrup

    12) If you eat oatmeal, what do put on that? Brown sugar, butter and milk

    13) Do you like breakfast pastries — danish, bear claws, etc.? Ohhhh yeaaaaah

    14) What about muffins? Good or bad? Like or dislike? Muffins are alright…but if I’m going to eat all those calories, I’d prefer a pastry.

    15) Choose one: bacon or sausage? Sausage

    16) How do you like your bacon? VERY crispy

    17) On sausage: Link or patty? Patty

    18) Choose one: Quisp or Quake? ** I don’t know these…sorry 🙁

    19) For anyone who likes raisin bran, who makes a better one: Kellogg’s or Post? Yuck…neither

    20) Does ketchup belong on the breakfast table? Ketchup doesn’t belong on ANY table.

    21) What about salsa? Same question. Salsa works

    22) Name a movie breakfast scene you particularly like or remember. Oh, if you hadn’t asked…I am drawing a complete blank here.

    23) When you were a kid — or even now: What about that colored milk you get after you eat Trix or Fruit Loops or something; to drink or not to drink? To drink!

    24) Did you and your siblings fight over the prizes in boxes of cereal? I am an only child, so I’d have to say no.

    25) We all know The Breakfast Club. So confess. Were you ever part of a “breakfast club”? No. Little miss goody two shoes…that’s me!

  19. ‘Public Enemy’. James Cagney and Mae Marsh.
If that had been a ruby red Rio Star, he wouldn’t have wasted it like that.
My mom used to send me a case for my Christmas present. Yummmmm!

  20. I didn’t plan on wieghing in on this one, but I must come to the fore on the Quisp/Quake issue.

    Quisp all the way!

And not because of him, the he-man (as a 7 year old boy, big muscles were way better than a propeller head!), but because of the cereal itself.
Yes, technically, the taste was the same as Capt’n Crunch, but the shape of the cereal made all the difference.
Quake was a hard, crunchy nodule that sat in opposition to the milk in your bowl – Quake would NOT allow any milk infestation, making me feel like I was eating sweet dog kibble. Quisp, on the other hand, was saucer-shaped. Ideal for holding milk, and thin-walled enough for the milk to soak in, forming a thick, milk-sugar paste in your mouth (after chewing it, not before) that repeated brushings could not remove from the crevasses in your back molars. What more could a sugar-craving kid want?

Also, does anyone else remember the advertising promotion they did – a cross-country race that ended in Lompoc, California to see which cereal would “win”? A whole series of TV commercials ran for what seemed like forever with this race.

  21. 1) Do you usually eat breakfast? No. Sometimes yes, but usually no.

    2) If yes, what do you eat? On my menu for the week, breakfast every day says “taquitos or bananas,” because, you know, I always intend to eat breakfast. But if I don’t cook the beef/eggs/potatoes/onions taquitos filling today, then this week I will, once again, be shoveling down a banana or a Larabar. If I think of it.

    3) Choose one: Coffee or tea? Don’t be mad. Tea.

    4) If you drink coffee, how do you drink it? Black, cream, sugar? Black. But when I used to go to Optimist Club meetings (hahahaha, it didn’t take, did it?), they always had this cinnamon hazelnut creamer, and I loved it, so I had it. And, um, creamer always cools down my coffee faster. But mostly I take it black.

    5) If you drink tea, how do you drink it? Frank and I like to drink hot tea when we’re playing chess. So when we’re playing chess or reading a book on a rainy day, I like it hot. In the summer, if it’s super-hot, I know it’s dumb to drink tea due to the fact that tea is a good diuretic and just might dehydrate me, but I love iced tea on those days. NO sugar in my iced tea. No ice, for that matter. Leave the ice in the pitcher and give me a cold glass of sugarless tea.

    6) Choose one: Oatmeal or Cream of Wheat? Well. I can’t eat American oats because of the gluten, but I can eat Scottish ones, and they’re really good. And I obviously can’t eat Cream of Wheat because of the gluten. So in today’s world, it’s Scottish oatmeal. However, give me no intestinal issues and a choice? Cream of Wheat all the way. I loved going to my grama’s when I was a kid and in my early twenties, because I always got Cream of Wheat. Throw in some butter and brown sugar, and I just have to call it a day.

    7) Do you like to go out to breakfast? No. I don’t like to go out to eat much, and I most assuredly don’t like having to drag my butt out of bed to eat food I’m not sure I’ll even like.

    8) If yes, do you have a place you really like to go? I used to love the Donut Stop in Amarillo. And the occasional IHOP visit (don’t laugh, sometimes you just want everything with a side of grease). But in Florida we found this teeny little diner across from the Hyundai dealership on 192, and the hashbrowns there were really good. Cooked in butter so they made me sick, but really good. Oh, and I always loved the taquitos from Whataburger. Potato and cheese taquito, no egg, please. Which, of course, is a hash brown and a slice of cheese stuffed inside a sub-par tortilla. And let’s not forget the chicken biscuit from Chick-Fil-A. Best chicken biscuits EVER.

    9) What’s your favorite thing to order when you’re there? In this fictional eating-breakfast-out land… well, if it’s Donut Stop, the strawberry cake donuts. Sometimes iced with that overly-sugared red icing, but usually without. Any other breakfast place, hashbrowns and/or pancakes. Or if they make a really good taquito, I’ll have a potato and cheese one (no egg, or really light on the egg) or a beef, potato, and cheese one (same on the eggs).

    10) How do you like your eggs? Hard-boiled or deviled. See, I don’t like anything with a runny or partially runny yolk, because that grosses me out. I can eat them over hard or scrambled, but only if they are salted, well-peppered, and covered in salsa, preferably homemade or from a good mexican restaurant. But none of that Pace crap. Otherwise, the eggs really do taste like something that shot right out of a chicken’s ***.

    11) What do you put on your pancakes? Butter and just enough syrup that it soaks all the way into the pancakes. I do not like excess syrup on my plate. Yick. Since I have the dairy problem, I may try putting coconut milk on top of them next time (the thick creamy part that comes right off the top of the can lid).

    12) If you eat oatmeal, what do put on that? Butter and honey. Brown sugar if I’m out of honey.

    13) Do you like breakfast pastries — danish, bear claws, etc.? I used to love Kolaches. Bavarian cream, cheese, or apricot. Also, the bakery that had the kolaches also made sausage rolls, and I could eat a dozen all by myself because they were sooooo good. And they were just one of those cocktail weenies baked into a roll. But they weren’t those pig-in-a-blanket things that other places sold, where they had a weenie and wrapped dough around it so you could see the weenie sticking out at both ends. Nuh-uh. The weenie was totally hidden.

    14) What about muffins? Good or bad? Like or dislike? I like them, especially banana nut muffins. No chocolate chip, nothing like that. And don’t put any pretty sprinkles or dustings of sugar or whatever on top of my muffins.

    15) Choose one: bacon or sausage? Bacon.

    16) How do you like your bacon? Crispy.

    17) On sausage: Link or patty? Teeny cocktail link inside a roll. Or just break it all up, add a little egg, some potatoes and onions, and stick it inside a tortilla.

    18) Choose one: Quisp or Quake? ** What or what? I’ll go with what.

    19) For anyone who likes raisin bran, who makes a better one: Kellogg’s or Post? Kellogg’s. Two scoops, yo.

    20) Does ketchup belong on the breakfast table? First I have to ask, breakfast is eaten at a table? Not side-by-side TV trays? To answer the question, Heck yes. It’s for the hashbrowns and the sausage if I have to have sausage and biscuits if there are biscuits involved. Oh, and if I’m eating an omelet, which is rare, because no matter how many times I say, “Please. Load it up with the meat and veggies and give me like half an egg,” they still insist on skimping on the items and throwing in two or three eggs. And some idiot in the kitchen will always insist on throwing in a green bell pepper even though the menu clearly does not list green bell pepper. So yeah, I need ketchup or salsa for those moments, too.

    21) What about salsa? Same question. Of course. It’s for the taquitos and the eggs and basically anything else.

    22) Name a movie breakfast scene you particularly like or remember. The scene in My Big Fat Greek Wedding where Ian and his professor friend are having coffee and potentially breakfast at the restaurant, and Tula is so taken with him that she keeps missing the cup when she tries to pour the coffee. “Your own personal Greek statue.” And then she ducks behind the counter when Ian comes to pay.

    23) When you were a kid — or even now: What about that colored milk you get after you eat Trix or Fruit Loops or something; to drink or not to drink? Yeck.

    24) Did you and your siblings fight over the prizes in boxes of cereal? No, I don’t think so.

    25) We all know The Breakfast Club. So confess. Were you ever part of a “breakfast club”? My friend Cindy and I would go to the bakery for sausage rolls after we jogged a few miles on a Saturday morning. Does that count?
