MB, drily commenting about the dolphin postcard in this post:
“Well, it certainly captures that unbridled enthusiasm that everyone but us feels about San Diego.”
I’m sorry. It was his tone that killed me. Seriously, I am dead.

I wasn’t there for the tone, obviously, but it does bring up a question for me…
What DOES everyone see in Southern California? I am asking that as a person who LIVES in Southern California. I guess I can remember back in the day when I thought it would be so cool to live here…so much to do, sunshine all the time. Blah, blah, blah.
I live here now, and I want OUT! It is expensive, and yeah, it’s sunny, but I personally hate going Christmas shopping in a tank top and flip flops. The Christmas lights just look stupid when it’s 90 degrees outside. I can’t find a single billboard written in a language I actually understand. People aren’t friendly toward one another. And all those fun things to do? They are crowded and pricy and there is too much trafic between here and there.
Sorry…my So Cal rant for the day.
MM — I know! I want out, too! Yesterday!
I feel ya, dawg.
I feel y’all! My family comes to visit Florida, and they all want to move here. I do not get it!
It’s really strange but I have a friend who moved out to Orange County and he is THRIVING. It really agrees with him. I used to worry about him being underweight and he looks super-healthy now.
He studied in cold places like Connecticut and Pittsburgh, and wound up in CA–my mind still boggles.
Tracey, I made it out. It took over ten years but I got out. Oregon will always welcome you.
Brian — I WAS out! Years ago! Lived and went to school in Seattle. Came home because mom said she was dying. She wasn’t.
New Jersey will welcome y… well, OK – SOME people in New Jersey will welcome you 😉 It’s slightly friendlier and cheaplier, plus you get actual seasons.
I was stationed in SD back in 1996; I loved it. Sun, beach, etc. Now I hear that there is a great undercurrent of facism there in the mexican population, or something, and it’s not a pleasant place to be anymore. Weird.
“Came home because mom said she was dying. She wasn’t.” I’m sorry. I just can’t help giggling like hell at that. It’s the thinly-veiled disappointment, I think. 🙂
Kate: “COLD PLACES” Mmmmm…. Yummy. I would DIE in SoCal or Florida. MUST. HAVE. SEASONS. MUST BE ABLE TO WEAR MY COLLECTION OF 147 SCARVES. AND MY WOOL CAPE. I would like some snow every now and again, though. We only get a really good flaking every three years or so.
The only place I’d consider leaving here for would be Colorado. We visited Castle Rock, the Springs and Denver last year and I just fell in lurve.
Or Ireland. Gads, don’t get me started. Just the thought of Southern Ireland makes my heart ache and my eyes well all up.
WG — Hahaha! I guess it does sound like that.
