color food

So I’m still hazy but not feverish. Thanks for the well wishes.

This weekend is the end of B*heme.

MB is working late and I’m sitting here having anxiety and eating orange food. Pretty much only orange food: Cheetos and tomato soup and Kraft Mac ‘n’ Cheese.

And will you think less of me if I tell you that they all go in the same bowl?

And will you think less of me if I tell you I’ll be watching the second installment of “Kid Nation” * — which I actually think is brilliant — whilst eating my MacCheetoToms?

I still have more to say about B*heme. But not now, not tonight. I need to try to relax.

So. Let’s see. You could tell me something weird that YOU eat.

(And how do I make mine because it sound so delicious, you ask? Well, take mac and plop in bowl. Splash bit of tomato soup on top, like sauce. Add crumbled Cheetos topping. Brush teeth immediately after. This is just how I do it because I know if I accidentally see my cheesy orange tongue later, I will scream. But that’s just me.)

*Okay. Wait. The little kid Jimmy, who was all homesick last week, sobbing, “I’m only 8 years old! I miss my mom and dad!”? Fuggedaboudit. And the 12-year-old girl from Boston who tried to comfort him saying — with her thick Boston accent, “Well, I know how much you miss them. But can you let me kinda stand in for your mahm and dad for a little while? I’d like to do that for you.”? Oh, I was gone. Bawling. So touching. WATCH the show. Don’t just write it off because of the controversy surrounding it. I think it’s going to become more substantive than people realize.

Okay. Wait again. The debate on “Kid Nation” amongst the 40 kids right now is “Will we kill a chicken?” A bunch of kids were all upset and then this no-nonsense black kid, about 11 years old, stands up and says, “How many of you eat chicken at home?”

Most kids raise their hands.

So the kid says, channeling his inner Shaniqua, “Okay. So what’s different now? Are y’all in love with the chickens or something?”

Another kid, clearly a poet, says into the camera, “As Shakespeare said, ‘To kill or not to kill?'”

I love these kids, this whole show.

    hahahahaha

Brilliant! They’re all workin’ it out, just workin’ it out.

  2. I know! I love “Are y’all in LOVE with the chickens or something?”

One of the little girls ran away when they chopped the chickens’ heads off. I guess she was in love with them.

  3. Parmesan cheese. With a spoon, out of a little bowl.

I was going to skip “Kid Nation” because of its potential to turn into a bad flashback from the ’60’s.*
“Let’s listen to the children, they’re SO much wiser than we.”
    Um, no, we weren’t.
    But I’m loving your description.
Tracey- watching reality TV, so you don’t have to.

*Which is why the previews for that new movie- having a moment, can’t remember the name, the one by the Lion King gal, with the Beatles’ songs?- sent a cold chill. Someone just made a gorgeous technicolor valentine to the most embarrassing portion of your life. And I wan’t even all that into the times.

  4. The weirdest food thing I can think of is that I like ham and cottage cheese. Together. You get some of that thin (but not too thin) sliced deli ham, you put a spoon of cottage cheese on it, then you roll it up and eat it.

  5. *Hummus and cottage cheese sandwiches (or crackers will do just fine; but the cottage cheese HAS to be mixed with the hummus)
*Mayonnaise and banana sandwiches (which is a VERRRRRY Southern thing, not my fault)
*ketchup on my mac n’ cheese — though I haven’t actually done that since college (hmmm…)

My husband puts ketchup on his omelettes and also his beans — regardless. But I always get the Eyebrow for putting salsa on my eggs. Weirdo.

Incidentally, the only thing that makes me feel better when I’m sick is a grilled cheese sandwich and tomato soup with Cheez-its in it. Is cheddar cheese and tomato the universal combination for soothing?

  6. Sal — You and MB would get along splendidly. THose shakers of Parmesan at Italian restaurants? He will unscrew the lid and dump basically the whole thing on his pasta while I try to make it look — somehow — like he didn’t just do that.

ricki –I think that sounds pretty good, actually.

WG — Hummus!!! Is that the best food ever? YUM. And yeah, the cheese and tomato thing — the healing power of comfort foods. YAY, cheese!

  7. Peanut butter and bacon. Muchas yummy, if you don’t mind losing a week off the end of your life.

In re: Kid Nation, I saw the premier and was underwhelmed. The kids were great, of course. That poor kid Jared from Georgia… I feel for him. The older kids are gonna build a locker just to stuff him inside.

It was the adults who drove me crazy. First of all Mr. Host Person, that “ancient book” was total hooey. Bonanza City was a boomtown, it rose and died, it had nothing to do with adult mismanagement and everything to do with where the railroad went. Second, I had serious doubts about the Physical Challenge to determine people’s places in the society. It just struck me as Class Warfare 101 – this arbitrary event makes that sector worth ten times what you earn. It’s just way too simplistic… I’m trying to figure out what that has to do with doing a job well, enjoying it, and need, which are the three factors to how the rest of us eventually find our place – or carve out a new one, as Sophia set about doing for her bicycle.

(Ironically, that taught her peers more about innovation and hard work for a reward than the actual set-up of the town. If they ever have a vote, she’ll wind up on the council – Mike’s doomed. The other Michael would probably get votes too.)

  8. No Nightfly you have to go all the way. BLT with peanut butter. Something about the tomatoes with the PB makes the difference.

Tracy – I too, liked Kid Nation, haven’t watched last night’s show, its taped on the DVR to watch with the hubby later. I’m very intrigued to see where it goes.

  9. Creative food, I call it. Two things. Peanut butter jelly mustard and cheese sandwiches, salami optional. It’s a sweet and sour thing.

The other is German chocolate cake with a kosher dill spear. I know how it sounds but it will really surprise you. It’s to die for…or from.

  10. peanut butter, jelly and potato chip sandwich. or pbj and bologna. it makes me hungry just thinking about it! and chocolate cake/frosting with a glass of beer…yum

  11. Lisa — I’ve never tried that. Hm.

NF — Peanut Butter and bacon — there’s a place near us that makes a peanut butter and bacon hamburger. Or should I say peanut butter and bacon ON a hamburger. It’s YUM.

And Kid Nation — Well, it’s Survivor for kids, basically. So there have to be challenges. I don’t know. It seems to encourage teamwork and every team has a chance to be on a different “rung” on the class ladder every week — with each new competition. I guess I’m just not sure how else — in the context of a game, basically — they would structure a society. And I like how if all the teams complete the competition/task within the allotted time frame, the WHOLE village gets a choice of reward. Like last week’s: Flat-screen TV OR more Porta-potties?

And they made the right choice. I dunno. I’m just diggin’ it right now.

Chick Voice — We’ll dig it together!

Witness — PBJ, mustard, cheese, salami opt. I can honestly say I’ve never tried that. Or heard of it. 😉

cindy — I love putting chips in any kind of sandwich!

  12. I think my younger sister would go for the MacCheetoTom, definitely. Not too long ago she and our great-uncle (widower, nearly 90) were sitting there rhapsodizing about their shared love of Kraft Mac-n-cheese–and he was so excited when she told him about Easy Mac!

I like PB but instead of on meat, how about on top of a hot mess of green beans and some curry powder?
The sandwich shop people probably think I’m out of my mind, but I ask for jalapenos and black olives on my turkey sandwich along with the usual L & T. (Hey, it’s partly their fault b/c they stopped offering horseradish dressing.)

  13. KAte — Oh, man. Green beans. I lurves me the green beans. I can eat an entire pot of ’em for dinner. Uhm, without sharing. Never tried them with PB and curry, though. It sounds kinda good. Viva la green beans!!
