From Sheila who got it from Dennis, my gallery of just some of the faces I love. I think most will be faces you know, but I’ll be happy to tell you who they are if you don’t:
10 Replies to “faces”
I also think Steve Buscemi is an excellent “face.” I also like Dennis’ choice of Monica Bellucci.
Cullen – I know. I love his face. Just goofy and funny and sad.
Sal – #3 is Isabelle Adjani. She does look rather Sophie Marceau-ish in that photo, though.
And that Gish — oh, I love her. Years ago, when I lived in Seattle, one of the big theatre houses did silent movie night once a month. They used a full orchestra in the orchestra pit and had a huge screen and my friends and I were addicted to it. I particularly remember “Broken Blossoms” and “Orphans of the Storm,” with Lillian Gish.
Man, that woman could move you WITHOUT WORDS! She was an astounding actress.
Tracey –
Silents are my secret vice, along with gospel quartets.
“Silents Sunday” on TCM is just another reason I don’t have cable.
What I try to explain to people is that you have to put yourself into the right mood. It’s a special sort of suspension of disbelief – the disbelief that people actually watched these films, took them seriously and enjoyed them.
You have to leave your present day expectations of film at the door.
But the technical advancements that allow re-mastering, proper speeds, and so on are a big help.

Yay! Tracey’s faces – I was hoping for these!
Makes me want to get a blog so I could up my own.
Excellent choices.
Is #3 Sophie Marceau?
That’s an uncharacteristically sultry Gish, I must say…

Is it just me or does the last little girl look like Joaquin Phoenix?
I enjoyed the faces Tracey. You could have stopped at Garbo though. The woman was a classic beauty.
Whenever I see photos of Mammie, I think of Tom & Jerry. Juvenile, I know.
WG — Hmmm. I don’t know …
ASM — Hey! Aren’t you in Scotland? I’m sorry — I am blatantly jealous, but I hope you’re having a wonderful time!!

Can you tell me who #11 (just above Katherine Hepburn) is? Looks very familiar, but I can’t place him.
Thanks a bunch.
Jason — Oh, that’s author Brennan Manning. He wrote an amazing book about the Christian life called, “The Ragamuffin Gospel.”
I love his writing. And that FACE. That wonderful craggy Irish face!!
Thanks. Haven’t heard of it, but maybe I saw the face on the book or something and it stuck with me.
