hahahaha I should have known you would know him!! Yeah, his stuff is magical. Kinda creepy and poetic.
I was in a play about Joseph Cornell … I played the young trashy waitress he took under his wing – and she then STOLE some of his boxes and tried to sell them to galleries. Obviously she was not the brightest bulb – the galleries immediately called Joseph: “Uhm … some dirty-haired girl just tried to sell one of your boxes to us …” She ended up being killed in a ratty hotel on the upper west side and her murder has never been solved.
A little bit of useless trivia there for you!
But it was SO COOL to really research this guy – he was kind of a wack job, but man, I love those boxes.
red — hahahaha! SO cool! You are full of surprises. Interesting story. I don’t know that much about his personal life, other than he was a bit of a recluse.
He lived with his mother in Queens, and his beloved younger brother who was crippled by cerebral palsy. I think he left the boroughs of New York City only once in his life – on a bus trip to … Massachusetts or something. Other than that, he just stayed in New York.
His last words before death were: “I wish I had not been so reserved” – which just makes me want to cry.
And hahahaha about the Medicis – heh heh heh “Medici popes. WhatEVER. So boring.” Uhm – you’re 5. How can you be OVER the Medici popes already??
Tracey, that #4 looks like the same eyes as in your blog header. I think it’s my favorite too…where do you get these???
Aren’t they great? But you can’t buy them anywhere. They are exchanged artist to artist. The idea is you’ve got to give to get.
So, these are ones you gave…or got?
Oh, no. I found them online, downloaded them. I’m a bit addicted to them and I’m thinking of starting to create some myself.
Beautiful!! I love the third one down!
Tracey – are you familiar with Joseph Cornell’s boxes? If not, I think you would FLIP OUT. These remind me of his boxes.
Yes, they are AMAZING! Love them. Do you know he’s got a few with a Medici theme? Don’t tell Cashel — seeing how he’s “so over” the Medicis.
Hahahahahahaha!!

Those last words — I think those are some of the saddest words I’ve ever heard.
And yeah, how does a 5-year-old even KNOW about the Medici popes enough to be BORED with them?? That always kills me.
Wonderful! Do you trade?
Jeannine — Not yet. I’m just thinking of getting started. I’ve seen your work, though; it’s lovely!
