We are watching a bizarre commercial featuring a knock-off of Princess Diana’s — now Kate Middleton’s — sapphire engagement ring. There are lots of close-ups of this bauble that I swear looks like it came from the gumball machine at Denny’s. A male British voice intones that you, too, can have this fake piece of unfortunate history for only 19.90. He sounds all emphatic and therefore vaguely sexy to me.

I am suddenly moved to tell MB something.

ME: Oh, I want that, you know.
HE: I’ll bet.
ME: It’s only (British accent) nineteen dollars and ninety cents.
HE (fingers crossed): I know, babe. Saving up. Only a couple more months now.

  1. Nothing says “I adore you,” more than a cheap glass copy of a ring originally chosen by a now-dead princess to symbolize her engagement to a man she barely knew who never loved her.

    At $19.90 it’s a steal!

  2. I passed up the Barack Obama Lava Lamp in the Odd Lots store a few years back hoping that a unique opportunity like this would come up. Yeah, there really was a lava lamp with his pic on it. I don’t suppose he gets any royalties from the sale. 🙂

  3. My daughter lives near London and she’s seen “Marry Me Instead” t-shirts. At least they make some sense. 😉
