truth from “the simpsons”

Random character on The Simpsons asking forgiveness of another:

“Will you forgive me as quickly as I forgave myself?”

This speaks to me deeply, know what I mean?

  1. i think forgiving ones self is a very very hard thing to do. my self forgiveness took years and even then there can still be a haunting reminder of it all. was not….is not an easy thing to do.

  2. cindy — Yeah, I agree with that. I don’t know though, if forgiving oneself is hard for everybody. It’s hard for me, but not everybody.

When I say it speaks to me deeply, I mean that I’ve had people apologize to me or ask forgiveness for something they did that was clearly wrong and their attitude as they asked for forgiveness has been very blase. They’d already forgiven themselves. They were OVER the hurt they had caused. It was no big deal to them. They were flippant.

In the context of the show, this character had abandoned his daughter and left her devastated for years. And this was his “apology.” I’m just saying I relate to that kind of attitude behind apologies. I’ve received them. I’ve received one recently.

I’ve now taken all the humor out of it trying to explain the context, but it actually was, well, funny.
