I love these ….. from Carmen Louis Cicero, who has an exhibition called “Things that Happen in the Moonlight” at the June Kelly Gallery in New York City from October 4 – November 6, 2007.
Aren’t they moody and noir-y and fun? I love how I feel like I’m witnessing something subversive. It feels like it’s happening right now — like the pieces are moving, not still.

Just what is this hunched-over figure in the hunched-over car doing in the shadows of the dead of night?? What is going ON?? Something good. Something baaad. I want to know! I think I need a feature-length film noir animation from this artist now, please.
So evocative! It’s like it’s Bogart of Cagney in all of those cars. And I love the dramatic skies!!
I love the light on the trees in that first one, the beam of the headlights in the third one. They’re so moody, but whimsical to me, too. I love the style here.
I like the texture; it’s as if you can feel the landscape.
I think the first is my favorite.
#3, heaven forgive me, just reminds me of the MST3K riff on This Island Earth: “Let’s escape under cover of afternoon in the largest car in the county!”
Still, I like how the moonlight in #4 looks like a searchlight creeping up on the car.
These are great – somehow they make me think of Edward Gorey’s illustrations…dark and whimsical at the same time. I love that.
Kate P — Yeah, the texture feels almost Van Gogh-y to me in a couple of them. And is that disrespectful to say? “Van Gogh-y”? Doesn’t seem right, but you know what I mean.
NF – /Let’s escape under cover of afternoon in the largest car in the county!/ HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
jayne — Wow. Totally. That’s a great observation. They do have that feel.
(NF, “Menopause can feel like a speeding car chase…)
Well rats. I saw that you said it was going to be in NYC and I got excited, but then I realized I won’t be there until the NINTH. And it will be gone.
Rats.
