An article by Nick Tosches at Vanity Fair online details his obsession with discovering the exact location where this beautiful, popular desktop wallpaper, known as Autumn, was taken.
Breathtaking. I love that. And that he took all that time to hunt it down, too.
What a great story. I have often looked at that same lane and wished to be walking among those leaves.
I am so glad he found the answer.
I especially liked the winter picture of the same lane. I’d love to see it in spring!
That’s some impressive research. Good on ya, Nick.
“I see people in black hoods and robes sitting round a table, bound by blood oath never to divulge the latitude and longitude of Autumn.”
Bwah!
Seriously, though, I think that is the awesomest Internet story ever.
Nick Tosches is incredible. His books are just phenomenal … wacky, personal, so well written that you want to excerpt every line, and remember them, emblazon them on your brain forever. He wrote a book about searching for the world’s last opium den. And he wrote the definitive book on Dean Martin – which sounds silly – how can a book about Dean Martin be a great book? But it’s about everything – the immigrant experience, Italy, and the creation of Las Vegas, and the underbelly of American life … etc. etc. Tosches is a genius writer.
That’s right, sheila! The Dean Martin book! I thought his name sounded familiar, but I haven’t read any of his books before. Hm. Must look around on Amazon now.
Everything he writes is autobiographical in some way, even that Dino book. It drives some people nuts – and they can’t stand him – but for me, it always works. His prose is like candy to me.
