nosy sleep survey

Oh, you know, it’s just me. Being nosy again.

(Remember to copy and paste the questions into the comments; otherwise, it’s harder to follow your answers, pippa. Thanks.)

So let’s talk about sleeping.

(Also, seems I forgot how to count. There is no #5. And I usually have no problems with 1-10. I ain’t fixing it. NF sweetly called my attention to it. I’m like, “Why isn’t he answering #5??”)

1. What is your optimal number of sleep hours per night?

Okay. That’s all for now. I could ask endless questions on this topic, but I’ll save them for another time.

Thank you for participating in another Nosy Survey!

32 Replies to “nosy sleep survey”

  1. 1. What is your optimal number of sleep hours per night?

    8.

    2. How many hours do you typically get?

    Zero!

I work nights. I manage 4-6 hours during the day. On a night off I can easily sleep 12 hours straight in compensation.

    3. Picturing yourself sleeping in big bed. Are you — or would you want to be — on the “driver’s side” or “passenger’s side” of the bed?

    Passenger. Or center.

    4. Kids in the bed with you — yes or no?

No. Even if I had any, the answer would be no.

    6. Pets in the bed with you — yes or no?

Yes, reluctantly. It’s the easiest way to keep them quiet during the day.

    7. Did you sleep with any stuffed animals when you were a kid? If so, what were they?

    A fox.

    8. If you’re having a sleepless night, what do you do to help you sleep?

Try to stay awake. Start thinking about something that I really want to think about, so that my body will, perversely, go so sleep out of spite.

    9. What size is your bed?

    Queen.

    10. What is your favorite kind of sheet? (100% cotton, blend, satin, etc.)

    Cotton or flannel. Nothing slippery.

    11. Hospital corners or fitted sheets?

    Fitted.

    12. Do you have a memory foam mattress topper and, if so, will you give it to me?

We have a memory foam mattress and I would LOVE to give it to you, but my husband likes it. It’s only soft after it warms up, which is after you’ve been in it for hours… in other words, when it’s time to get up.

    13. Please describe your bed in lurid detail — colors, patterns, pillows, etc.

Weeeellll… actually this is my husband’s bed from before we met, so it’s “batchelor style.” Lots of plaid. Sheets that don’t match each other or even fit the mattress, thrift store blankets, that sort of thing. And five pillows– two for me and three for him, because he has to have a pillow covering his face at all times (don’t ask). Oh, and on my side there is a sheepskin rug for extra warmth.

    14. Just for bed adornment now — how many pillows is just right? How many is too many?

Adornment? I don’t think we adorn. It’s all functional.

    15. How many pillows do you like to sleep with?

    See #13.

    16. Describe your ideal bedroom atmosphere for sleeping. For instance, do you like a cool room? Warm room? Really dark? Some peeking light? Etc.?

Warm and dark. (These days the bedroom window is blocked off with a foam insulation panel to help trick my body into thinking that days are nights.) And, ideally? Really quiet.

    17. What or where is the best sleep you’ve ever had outside a bedroom?

Sleeping outside in a sleeping bag on a clear night. Back when I lived in the desert. There’s something about waking up to the stars.

    18. How old were you when you graduated from a crib or bed with rails to a real bed?

I don’t remember early childhood very well, so I really don’t know.

    19. If someone in the bed has a problem that keeps the other awake — snoring, jimmy legs, etc. — who should leave the bed? The person doing the bugging or the person being bugged?

In this house the person being bugged goes upstairs and sleeps in the guest room. Or just poes the snorer until he rolls over.

    20. TV in the bedroom — yes or no?

No. God no. 99% of what’s on TV raises my blood pressure and would keep me wide awake for hours.

    21. Do you wake to an alarm? If so, what is the sound?

    No.

    22. Does your bedroom door have a lock on it?

    No.

    23. Do you have summer bedding and winter bedding?

Yes, with a down comforter for the winter. Down is heavenly.

    24. Women: Do you sleep in jammies, nightgown, underwear, or ….. you know ….

Long nightgown. Pajama pants. Heavy socks. Sometimes long underwear.

    It’s a little chilly here.

  2. 1. What is your optimal number of sleep hours per night?
–I really do need eight for best results. 🙂

    2. How many hours do you typically get?
–Six or seven seems to be as much as I get most days. I make up for the loss on Saturdays. I love Saturdays. I need Saturdays.

    3. Picturing yourself sleeping in big bed. Are you — or would you want to be — on the “driver’s side” or “passenger’s side” of the bed?
    –I’m a driver’s sider.

    4. Kids in the bed with you — yes or no?
–Only if they’ve had a bad dream, and then it’s only for that night. They don’t start the night with me.

    6. Pets in the bed with you — yes or no?
–Oh yes. My teacup poodle scootches down under the covers into the crook of my legs.

    7. Did you sleep with any stuffed animals when you were a kid? If so, what were they?
–Yes. I have a white bear named Sherman. I still sleep with him every night. I know that’s weird, but I embrace my weirdness. And I embrace my bear.

    8. If you’re having a sleepless night, what do you do to help you sleep?
–I usually try to get up and have something warm to eat. Sometimes I’ll put on the news.

    9. What size is your bed?
    –King

    10. What is your favorite kind of sheet? (100% cotton, blend, satin, etc.)
–some sort of cotton with a high thread count.

    11. Hospital corners or fitted sheets?
    –Fitted sheets.

    12. Do you have a memory foam mattress topper and, if so, will you give it to me?
–No, I don’t have one of those. I have had in the past and loved it, but I don’t currently have one.

    13. Please describe your bed in lurid detail — colors, patterns, pillows, etc.
–A funky-colored striped quilt that would be quite at home in our Yurt Commune, a navy-blue electric blanket set on High, plain white sheets, and piles of clean clothes that need to be folded.

    14. Just for bed adornment now — how many pillows is just right? How many is too many?
–I just need one. Mine is a squshy feather one. I don’t mind a bed covered in cool throw pillows, but I haven’t bothered doing that for mine.

    15. How many pillows do you like to sleep with?
    –Again, just the one.

    16. Describe your ideal bedroom atmosphere for sleeping. For instance, do you like a cool room? Warm room? Really dark? Some peeking light? Etc.?
–I have to have a fan blowing somewhere, but not blowing ON me. I think it’s just the white-noise issue for me. I don’t like sleeping in dead-quiet places; it’s like I hear every teeny creak and squeak when I do. Some kind of low hum puts me out for the night.

    17. What or where is the best sleep you’ve ever had outside a bedroom?
–Hm. I guess I’d have to say the couch, when I’ve been sick or something and when people don’t traipse in and out slamming doors and bothering me. 🙂

    18. How old were you when you graduated from a crib or bed with rails to a real bed?
–I think I was probably about two.

    19. If someone in the bed has a problem that keeps the other awake — snoring, jimmy legs, etc. — who should leave the bed? The person doing the bugging or the person being bugged?
–It stands to reason that the person who’s awake should probably do the moving, since there’s no use in two people being disturbed. Plus, there’s a great guilt wedge that can be used later if necessary. 🙂

    20. TV in the bedroom — yes or no?
–Not for me. TV tends to be a family activity; we all watch something we like, and we watch it together and talk about it while it’s going on.

    21. Do you wake to an alarm? If so, what is the sound?
–I set the alarm on my cell phone. It’s the sound of a barking dog and a ringing telephone.

    22. Does your bedroom door have a lock on it?
–Yes, but it’s on the outside. We all have locks on our bedrooms because one of our children is mentally ill and rummages through our rooms if we’re not paying close attention.

    23. Do you have summer bedding and winter bedding?
–No, except for the electric blanket. I don’t need it in the summertime so it comes off the bed.

    24. Women: Do you sleep in jammies, nightgown, underwear, or ….. you know ….
–A giant t-shirt is usually enough. Sometimes I also add in some cuddle-duds longhandle underwear legging thingys if it’s especially chilly.

    25. Men: Same thing. Yes, please tell me if you wear a nightgown. Thank you.
–I think he sleeps in pajamas these days. He has his own bedroom and I have mine, so I don’t really pay much attention to what he wears to bed.

  3. 1. What is your optimal number of sleep hours per night?
I haven’t figured that out but it’s more than I currently get.

    2. How many hours do you typically get?
Around 6-7 but it’s usually closer to 6. That’s not counting how many times I’m awakened.

    3. Picturing yourself sleeping in big bed. Are you — or would you want to be — on the “driver’s side” or “passenger’s side” of the bed?
Um, right now I’m on the passenger side but that’s because it’s closer to the door/farther from the outside wall.

    4. Kids in the bed with you — yes or no?
    N/A
    6. Pets in the bed with you — yes or no?
For part of the night there’s The Cat.

    7. Did you sleep with any stuffed animals when you were a kid? If so, what were they?
Yes. Tons, between me and my sister. Garfield, raccoons, dogs. One night when my adult cousin was watching us, he kissed them all goodnight when he was putting us to bed. Hilarious.

    8. If you’re having a sleepless night, what do you do to help you sleep?
Put on music (like Christopher O’Riley’s “True Love Waits”) or pray the Rosary.

    9. What size is your bed?
Full. It belonged to my great-aunt; her bedroom set was given to me by my other great-aunt as a thank-you for helping care for my dying great-aunt.

    10. What is your favorite kind of sheet? (100% cotton, blend, satin, etc.)
    Very soft cotton.

    11. Hospital corners or fitted sheets?
Well, the bottom sheet is fitted and I attempt hospital corners on the flat sheet.

    12. Do you have a memory foam mattress topper and, if so, will you give it to me?
Yes but I don’t like it that much–I will give it to you if you want to be sweaty.

    13. Please describe your bed in lurid detail — colors, patterns, pillows, etc.
A few years back, my grandfather sent me Christmas money and I used it for a bedding set: vibrant red sheets and a comforter cover that is the same red on the underside and then the top is a cream background that halfway down turns into stripes of coral, brown, and the same red, alternating with cream in skinny stripes in the beginning, turning to wide bands at it goes to the bottom. My SIL helped me sew the matching shams into valances for my one measly window.

    14. Just for bed adornment now — how many pillows is just right? How many is too many?
Two is just right for me.

    15. How many pillows do you like to sleep with?
Most nights, I use one. Two under my head if I’m stuffed up. Or if it’s a Certain Time the extra pillow goes under my back.

    16. Describe your ideal bedroom atmosphere for sleeping. For instance, do you like a cool room? Warm room? Really dark? Some peeking light? Etc.?
Noise blocked out, cool but not cold, soft light at the doorway.

    17. What or where is the best sleep you’ve ever had outside a bedroom?
    Well, I recently had a colonoscopy. . .

    18. How old were you when you graduated from a crib or bed with rails to a real bed?
    No idea.

    19. If someone in the bed has a problem that keeps the other awake — snoring, jimmy legs, etc. — who should leave the bed? The person doing the bugging or the person being bugged?
My guess is that the person who’s being bugged is the only one awake and able to leave the bed.

    20. TV in the bedroom — yes or no?
    No, and never.

    21. Do you wake to an alarm? If so, what is the sound?
Yes, and it’s the radio (news station). Buzzers or beepers frighten me too much.

    22. Does your bedroom door have a lock on it?
I have to go check. . . yes.

    23. Do you have summer bedding and winter bedding?
No. I thought I’d need flannel sheets in the winter because I did growing up, but it seems I get overheated. Especially with The Cat draped across my legs.

    24. Women: Do you sleep in jammies, nightgown, underwear, or ….. you know ….
PJ’s–a PJ tee and PJ shorts or pants. Right now the heat’s not on yet so sometimes I also wear socks.

    25. Men: Same thing. Yes, please tell me if you wear a nightgown. Thank you.
    I thought you’d want to know about. . . you know. . .

  4. 1. What is your optimal number of sleep hours per night?
    10. I know. It’s still 10.

    2. How many hours do you typically get?
    7

    3. Picturing yourself sleeping in big bed. Are you — or would you want to be — on the “driver’s side” or “passenger’s side” of the bed?
    Driver baby.

    4. Kids in the bed with you — yes or no?
    Hell no.

    6. Pets in the bed with you — yes or no?
    And hell no again.

    7. Did you sleep with any stuffed animals when you were a kid? If so, what were they?
    Yes. Stuffed ratty tatty bear.

    8. If you’re having a sleepless night, what do you do to help you sleep?
Move to the guest bedroom, and if that doesn’t work, tv.

    9. What size is your bed?
    Queen

    10. What is your favorite kind of sheet? (100% cotton, blend, satin, etc.)
    Flannel in the winter.

    11. Hospital corners or fitted sheets?
    Fitted please.

    12. Do you have a memory foam mattress topper and, if so, will you give it to me?
    Yes. And umm….

    13. Please describe your bed in lurid detail — colors, patterns, pillows, etc.
    Brown. We’re fancy.

    14. Just for bed adornment now — how many pillows is just right? How many is too many?
I like three. We have two.

    15. How many pillows do you like to sleep with?
    Two.

    16. Describe your ideal bedroom atmosphere for sleeping. For instance, do you like a cool room? Warm room? Really dark? Some peeking light? Etc.?
Oooh. This is fun. Cool room. Dark. Fan running.

In a car. I was not driving at the time.

    18. How old were you when you graduated from a crib or bed with rails to a real bed?
    Huh. I have no idea.

    19. If someone in the bed has a problem that keeps the other awake — snoring, jimmy legs, etc. — who should leave the bed? The person doing the bugging or the person being bugged?
I’m the one who always has the problem, whether it be moving or not sleeping or being bugged by spouse, whatever. I always move. My dad slept on the hallway floor for the last 10 years of my parents marriage (healthy!). I comes with issues…

    20. TV in the bedroom — yes or no?
    No.

    21. Do you wake to an alarm? If so, what is the sound?
Yes. A four and three year old. Usually I’m jumped on.

    22. Does your bedroom door have a lock on it?
    Oh yes.

    23. Do you have summer bedding and winter bedding?
    Oh yes.

    24. Women: Do you sleep in jammies, nightgown, underwear, or ….. you know ….
    Unders. 🙂
    25. Men: Same thing. Yes, please tell me if you wear a nightgown. Thank you.
    Spouse same.

  5. GraD — /Yes. I have a white bear named Sherman./

That is so cute to me. I love it.

Kate P — I love that your cousin kissed all your animals good night.

Oh, and I do want to know about ….. you know … with the men. I need to reword that. Hahaha.

  6. 1. What is your optimal number of sleep hours per night?
    Eight or so.

    2. How many hours do you typically get?
Seven. I am, however, a champion napper.

    3. Picturing yourself sleeping in big bed. Are you — or would you want to be — on the “driver’s side” or “passenger’s side” of the bed?
I’m usually on the passenger side.

    4. Kids in the bed with you — yes or no?
    N/A

    5. THIS QUESTION INTENTIONALLY LEFT BLANK
    😉

    6. Pets in the bed with you — yes or no?
When I was a boy, the cat liked to jump onto the foot of the bed. Kind of miss that. The Official Dog is too rambunctious to sleep at the foot of the bed.

    7. Did you sleep with any stuffed animals when you were a kid? If so, what were they?
    Nope.

    8. If you’re having a sleepless night, what do you do to help you sleep?
    Reading in bed sometimes helps.

    9. What size is your bed?
    Queen.

    10. What is your favorite kind of sheet? (100% cotton, blend, satin, etc.)
I never really thought about it. I suppose they do feel different, but I can’t say that one or the other stands out in my mind as comfier or more relaxing or anything.

    11. Hospital corners or fitted sheets?
    We have fitted sheets.

    12. Do you have a memory foam mattress topper and, if so, will you give it to me?
We do – but it’s attached to the mattress. I’d have to give you the whole thing. Sorry, no deal!

    13. Please describe your bed in lurid detail — colors, patterns, pillows, etc.
Simple frame, dark metal headboard and footboard. (Is that the correct term?) Sturdy boxspring. We splurged on the actual mattress (as seen above). Super-comfy, I think it was definitely worth it. The sheets are varied – we have a lavendar set (Nate Burkus), a pinkish set, and plain whites. For spring and fall, we have a thin comforter supplemented by an old knitted oversize throw with fringe; in the winter, the Three-Dog Comforter… super-thick, purple, the top-side textured almost like courduroy, the bottom softer. Pillows – one pair each, coordinated cases over pillow ticks (I think that’s the word), and bolsters for show.

    14. Just for bed adornment now — how many pillows is just right? How many is too many?
I am exactly the wrong person to ask! This is the first time I’ve had bolsters, throw pillows for the sofa, valences over the blinds… anything like that. I’m the stereotypical bachelor who had no idea about any of this before getting married.

    15. How many pillows do you like to sleep with?
    Two.

    16. Describe your ideal bedroom atmosphere for sleeping. For instance, do you like a cool room? Warm room? Really dark? Some peeking light? Etc.?
Cool room. I can always use the covers, or let some cool air under if I’m roasting. I like to shut the door. A faint little light is nice – we have faux candles that simulate open flame without the bother of actually setting stuff on fire. I can handle a little white noise or one of those “natural sounds” settings, but I prefer quiet.

    17. What or where is the best sleep you’ve ever had outside a bedroom?
In college we used to have a pink oversized armchair. I would curl up in that for naps. When the house broke up the chair was given away. Somewhere, one of the guys has a gag photo of me in a folding chair on that spot, looking very sad. Our current sofa/love seat are both very good, though.

    18. How old were you when you graduated from a crib or bed with rails to a real bed?
Don’t remember… maybe two. But I would fall out of bed often enough the first couple of years to scare my folks into putting my mattress directly on the floor until I was five or six.

    19. If someone in the bed has a problem that keeps the other awake — snoring, jimmy legs, etc. — who should leave the bed? The person doing the bugging or the person being bugged?
It SHOULD be the problem-causer… but of course, usually they’re sleeping and unaware of it, so it falls on the one getting woken up to do something!

    20. TV in the bedroom — yes or no?
Hells no. The only time I’ve ever had a TV in my room was when I was living in a boarding house and the room was the only space I had.

    21. Do you wake to an alarm? If so, what is the sound?
I have an alarm to back up my alarm to back up my primary system of waking up, which is my wife elbowing me in the ribs. 😉 The alarms are buzzers, different patterns. I used to use a radio station but sometimes the tuning would float a little on me, and static does NOT wake you up reliably in the morning.

    22. Does your bedroom door have a lock on it?
Yes, but the doors are pretty old. They lock only with a key, and nobody knows where it is. We didn’t get it from the previous owner.

    23. Do you have summer bedding and winter bedding?
We switch the comforters, but otherwise, the sheet sets are the same. We just rotate them in when we need clean sheets.

    24. Women: Do you sleep in jammies, nightgown, underwear, or ….. you know ….

    25. Men: Same question. (And, yes, please tell me if you wear a nightgown. Thank you.)
Nope. Usually shorts and a t-shirt. I may skip the t-shirt in the summer. I’ll go from shorts to lounge pants in the winter.

  7. 1. What is your optimal number of sleep hours per night 7 or so

    2. How many hours do you typically get? 6 ish

    3. Picturing yourself sleeping in big bed. Are you — or would you want to be — on the “driver’s side” or “passenger’s side” of the bed? Passenger side – my hubster gets the drivers side and a big chunck of the passenger side too.. he takes up as much space as he can.

    4. Kids in the bed with you — no

    6. Pets in the bed with you — yes

    7. Did you sleep with any stuffed animals when you were a kid? If so, what were they? I slept with Snuggles and Mrs Snuggles, his wife. They were bears. And Dorothy who was a horse.

    8. If you’re having a sleepless night, what do you do to help you sleep? Get up and read from the Bible or pray.

    9. What size is your bed? King sized

    10. What is your favorite kind of sheet? (100% cotton, blend, satin, etc.) This time of year, flannel all the way.

    11. Hospital corners or fitted sheets? Fitted

    12. Do you have a memory foam mattress topper and, if so, will you give it to me? Sadly, no we don’t.

    13. Please describe your bed in lurid detail — colors, patterns, pillows, etc. We have a king sized bed with a pillow-top mattress. In the summer we have a set of 600 thread count sheets that were a bit of a splurge. Last Spring our fitted flannel sheet tore. So, right now we have the regluar600 thread count fitted sheet on and the other sheet is flannel. Colors? Fitted is very dark blue with a fleur-de-lis pattern on it. That was spelled incorrectly. Deal with it. Not fitted is color blocks of blue, red, green and sort of gold. Very manly. Then we have a light blue fuzzy blanket and a comforter that is green and burgundy.

    14. Just for bed adornment now — how many pillows is just right? How many is too many? All our pillows are functional. So, for adornment, any is too many.

    15. How many pillows do you like to sleep with? Just one

    16. Describe your ideal bedroom atmosphere for sleeping. For instance, do you like a cool room? Warm room? Really dark? Some peeking light? Etc.? I like a cool room… and just a tiny bit of light so I don’t trip over anything if I have to get up to visit the loo.

    17. What or where is the best sleep you’ve ever had outside a bedroom?
My grandparents lake cabin. Snoozing on the dock in the sun.

    18. How old were you when you graduated from a crib or bed with rails to a real bed? three? I don’t remember

    19. If someone in the bed has a problem that keeps the other awake — snoring, jimmy legs, etc. — who should leave the bed? The person doing the bugging or the person being bugged?
This depends on what each person has going on the next day. If the bugger has nothing big going on – they should go and leave the comfy bed for the person with work or an appointment or whatever.
    20. TV in the bedroom — yes or no?

    21. Do you wake to an alarm? If so, what is the sound?
Yes, usually the news or weather.
    22. Does your bedroom door have a lock on it? Yes but we dont’ use it.

    23. Do you have summer bedding and winter bedding? Yes

    24. Women: Do you sleep in jammies, nightgown, underwear, or ….. you know …. I fall into the ….um… you know… catagory.

  8. 1. What is your optimal number of sleep hours per night?

8 or more. I likes me some sleep.

    2. How many hours do you typically get?

    Usually watch TV.

    9. What size is your bed?

    Queen

    10. What is your favorite kind of sheet? (100% cotton, blend, satin, etc.)

    11. Hospital corners or fitted sheets?

Is there a choice? I use a fitted sheet and then do hospital corners on my flat sheet. My bed is like an envelope.

    12. Do you have a memory foam mattress topper and, if so, will you give it to me?

We have an entire Tempur-pedic bed, and no you cannot have it. I love it.

    13. Please describe your bed in lurid detail — colors, patterns, pillows, etc.

We have a queen-sized bed from Bassett, with a carved headboard and footboard. (I don’t really like it now, but it was the style when we bought it.) 20. TV in the bedroom — yes or no?

    Good heavens, no.

  9. 1. What is your optimal number of sleep hours per night?

    Ten

    2. How many hours do you typically get?

    4. Kids in the bed with you — yes or no?

    No way!

    6. Pets in the bed with you — yes or no?

    Ew.

    7. Did you sleep with any stuffed animals when you were a kid? If so, what were they?

I must admit that I did. I had a stuffed dog named Parley. He was a print pillow dog that I got once because I was allergic to dogs. I named him after my neighbors dog.

    8. If you’re having a sleepless night, what do you do to help you sleep?

I have a staring contest with the glowing stars on our ceiling. They always win.

    9. What size is your bed?

    10. What is your favorite kind of sheet? (100% cotton, blend, satin, etc.)

    11. Hospital corners or fitted sheets?

nothing tucked in. I like them loose.

    12. Do you have a memory foam mattress topper and, if so, will you give it to me?

Our whole mattress is memory foam! NASA makes good stuff.

    13. Please describe your bed in lurid detail — colors, patterns, pillows, etc.

    umm… paisley I think. browns, greens, blues…

    14. Just for bed adornment now — how many pillows is just right? How many is too many?

A couple decorative pillows are there because they came with the comforter set.

    15. How many pillows do you like to sleep with?

I’m a one pillow person until the cold winter nights when my body pillow comes to keep me warm.

    16. Describe your ideal bedroom atmosphere for sleeping. For instance, do you like a cool room? Warm room? Really dark? Some peeking light? Etc.?

DARK and cold. The colder it gets the more blankets I get to use. I love the weight. If I could get a blanket made of lead like the bib they put on you at the dentist office I would.

    17. What or where is the best sleep you’ve ever had outside a bedroom?

The High Sierra’s in northern California on a hiking trip.

    18. How old were you when you graduated from a crib or bed with rails to a real bed?

    The bugger.

    20. TV in the bedroom — yes or no?

    Never.

    21. Do you wake to an alarm? If so, what is the sound?

You bet. Gotta keep the buggers out sometimes.

    23. Do you have summer bedding and winter bedding?

Yes. Cotton for the summer and flannel for the winter.

    24. Women: Do you sleep in jammies, nightgown, underwear, or ….. you know ….

    Boxer shorts.

  10. Lisa — /Picturing yourself sleeping in (a) big bed. Are you — or would you want to be — on the “driver’s side” or “passenger’s side” of the bed?/

If you’re standing at the foot of the bed, I’m on your left.

Hahahaha, Lisa. So that’s the passenger’s side, right? Lying in bed in your usual spot, you’re on the right, right?

~ NF pointed out my counting error — very nicely, I might add. I left a note at the top of the survey.

  11. Oh, and I need to change the wording on the hospital corner/fitted sheet question. Some people use a flat sheet for the bottom sheet and just hospital corner the edges. I think that’s what I was getting at, but sometimes even I hardly know.

  12. 1. What is your optimal number of sleep hours per night? 8

    2. How many hours do you typically get? 7

    3. Picturing yourself sleeping in big bed. Are you — or would you want to be — on the “driver’s side” or “passenger’s side” of the bed? Is that lying in bed? Driver’s side.

    4. Kids in the bed with you — yes or no? Easier to get in their bed

    6. Pets in the bed with you — yes or no? No, but they did it anyway.

    7. Did you sleep with any stuffed animals when you were a kid? If so, what were they? there was a stuffed rabbit with an orange and white polka-dot cloth body, but that was all

    8. If you’re having a sleepless night, what do you do to help you sleep? Bach Flower Remedies Rescue Sleep (which I know is a total placebo, but seems to work)and intercessory prayer for others. But I usually just give up and watch a silent movie on the VCR.

    9. What size is your bed? two twins pushed together, to end the Mattress Wars

    10. What is your favorite kind of sheet? (100% cotton, blend, satin, etc.) 100% cotton, but it doesn’t have to be fancy cotton. I like flannel, as well, but it doesn’t get cold enough here for them.

    11. Hospital corners or fitted sheets? Fitted, though I can do corners- my mom was a nurse

    12. Do you have a memory foam mattress topper and, if so, will you give it to me? IKEA mattress topper, preferred over memory foam, which is too HOT. Of course, if I had one, you could have it…

    13. Please describe your bed in lurid detail — colors, patterns, pillows, etc. Blue, white, red and yellow patchwork quilt bedspread, with three matching pillow shams. Three throw pillows: blue/white floral, yellow/white/black stripe, red paisley calico. No headboard, no footboard. Three pillows for sleeping- behind the sham pillows.

    14. Just for bed adornment now — how many pillows is just right? How many is too many? Three is just right. More than five is too many. Married daughter has seven.

    15. How many pillows do you like to sleep with? 1

    16. Describe your ideal bedroom atmosphere for sleeping. For instance, do you like a cool room? Warm room? Really dark? Some peeking light? Etc.? Medium temperature. Natural light through curtains is okay, but I hate green glowy electronic device lights. Or light shining under doors.

    17. What or where is the best sleep you’ve ever had outside a bedroom? Girl Scout camp. On an army cot with a foam matress in a shed with galvanized sides and roof. The sides were propped open on brackets, so the night breeze circulated. Cicadas, the warm smell of cedar. Wonderful

    18. How old were you when you graduated from a crib or bed with rails to a real bed? Still sleeping in the youth bed at four- so five? Six?

    19. If someone in the bed has a problem that keeps the other awake — snoring, jimmy legs, etc. — who should leave the bed? The person doing the bugging or the person being bugged? depends on the other sleeping choices. I can sleep happily on the couch, but my husband can’t, so I usually wind up moving. I spent almost a year in the guest room as the Insomniac Queen of Hot Flashes.

    20. TV in the bedroom — yes or no? No.

    21. Do you wake to an alarm? If so, what is the sound? No alarm. Either the cats wake me up to feed them (they know better than to try him) or natural light

    22. Does your bedroom door have a lock on it?Yes

    23. Do you have summer bedding and winter bedding? No, we just add or subtract blankets

    24. Women: Do you sleep in jammies, nightgown, underwear, or ….. you know ….nightgown. April Cornell is the best.

    25. Men: Same question. (And, yes, please tell me if you wear a nightgown. Thank you.)

  13. Tracey, I guess. When we got married, that side was the nearest to the alarm clock, and my husband is notorious for turning the alarm off w/o knowing it, so I had to be on the alarm clock side!

Unmarried people: Be sure and THINK before you pick your side of the bed, as it will be your side for life!

  14. Ooops. Number 3 is wrong. Passenger, please.
My grandfather, who died in 1986, wore nightshirts all his life. Refused to wear pajamas. When they became hard to buy, my grandmother ran them up on the sewing machine.

  15. NF — //19. If someone in the bed has a problem that keeps the other awake — snoring, jimmy legs, etc. — who should leave the bed? The person doing the bugging or the person being bugged?

It SHOULD be the problem-causer… but of course, usually they’re sleeping and unaware of it, so it falls on the one getting woken up to do something!//

I’ve thought about this one a lot, because MB has the jimmy legs and he BIG, pippa. Big legs flailing and trying to kill me while I sleep. But he’s asleep when he’s doing that. It’s not on purpose. So I guess I would say that it falls to the buggee to move or leave the area, not the bugger. If I woke him up to move when he’s in such a deep sleep and had to watch him stagger about just to make me happy, I’d feel terrible. It’s easier for me to just leave and let him sleep.

  16. You have a tough situation with that, Tracey. Lots easier to sleep through a noise than physical impact.

The best of all possible worlds is to be able to stop the bugging without anyone having to move. Will he stop when poked or jostled, without waking up? My experience so far has been that a gentle (ish) nudge to a snorer will correct the problem without waking up the snorer… don’t know about something like the jimmy legs, though.

  17. 1. What is your optimal number of sleep hours per night?

I can’t seem to sleep more hours than 6 no matter how hard I try.

    2. How many hours do you typically get?

    6. Come rain or come shine.

    3. You are lying in a big bed. Are you — or would you want to be — on the “driver’s side” or “passenger’s side” of the bed?

I lie diagonally across the middle, in a frozen pose like the god Mercury.

    4. Kids in the bed with you — yes or no?

    Hell no.

    6. Pets in the bed with you — yes or no?

Yes. There is a small purring ball of fur lying in between my feet.

    7. Did you sleep with any stuffed animals when you were a kid? If so, what were they?

I had a grey elephant that my mother made me. That thing came to college with me.

    8. If you’re having a sleepless night, what do you do to help you sleep?

Sometimes I get up and read. I have a hard time on sleepless nights.

    9. What size is your bed?

    Double.

    10. What is your favorite kind of sheet? (100% cotton, blend, satin, etc.)

    Flannel.

    11. On the bottom sheet — flat with hospital corners or a fitted sheet?

    Fitted sheet

    12. Do you have a memory foam mattress topper and, if so, will you give it to me?

I don’t have one but I want one!

    13. Please describe your bed in lurid detail — colors, patterns, pillows, etc.

I like dark colors on my bed. My sheets are always deep reds and dark browns. I have a down comforter and then an awesome red blanket on top of that, the softest blanket known to man. I also have a brown crocheted blanket made for me as a housewarming gift by my friend Maria. My cat has co-opted this blanket for her nightly masturbatory paw-kneading extravaganza.

    14. Just for bed adornment now — how many pillows is just right? How many is too many?

    I have four pillows.

    15. How many pillows do you like to sleep with?

I sleep on two stacked pillows.

    16. Describe your ideal bedroom atmosphere for sleeping. For instance, do you like a cool room? Warm room? Really dark? Some peeking light? Etc.?

I prefer my room to be cold and the blankets warm. It has to be really freezing for me to close the window. I like the cool air, especially under the down comforter. I like things to be pitch black.

    17. What or where is the best sleep you’ve ever had outside a bedroom?

I fell asleep on the lobby floor of the theatre department in college. We had been competing in the regional theatre competition and had had a week of long long days. I was the star of that particular show. I was also in college so, you know, I had to go to classes too. We came back from the regional competition and it was 3 in the morning. While the stagehands were unloading the trucks, before I would be needed, I lay down on the hard hard floor and was instantly asleep and I will remember that brief glorious cat nap always. There’s a picture of me out there somewhere lying on the lobby floor under the marquee.

    18. How old were you when you graduated from a crib or bed with rails to a real bed?

I don’t know! I had physical problems as a baby and had to wear a brace on my legs which delayed my walking development by some years. I do know that the first time they took the brace off, I promptly rolled over and fell off my parents bed.

    19. If someone in the bed has a problem that keeps the other awake — snoring, jimmy legs, etc. — who should leave the bed? The person doing the bugging or the person being bugged?

    Not applicable.

    20. TV in the bedroom — yes or no?

    No.

    21. Do you wake to an alarm? If so, what is the sound?

Yes, I have an alarm although I have been waking up at the same time for years – whether I’m on holiday and can sleep late or no. The sound of my alarm is an old-fashioned telephone ring.

    22. Does your bedroom door have a lock on it?

You know, I have no idea.

    23. Do you have summer bedding and winter bedding?

Yes. I count the days until I can bust out the flannel.

    24. Women: Do you sleep in jammies, nightgown, underwear, or ….. you know ….

I admit it. I sleep naked. But, small quirk, I MUST wear socks to bed. even in the summer. I have very specific sleep-socks that I don’t wear anywhere else. Fuzzy, loosey-goosey around the ankles, soft.

    25. Men: Same question. (And, yes, please tell me if you wear a nightgown. Thank you.)

  18. 1. What is your optimal number of sleep hours per night?
As many as I can get. In an ideal world, 8. Now if I only knew where that ideal world is.

    2. How many hours do you typically get?
Never enough. On a good night, four uninterrupted, five total. And that’s way, way less than I need.

    3. You are lying in a big bed. Are you — or would you want to be — on the “driver’s side” or “passenger’s side” of the bed?
If someone’s “driving” the bed, I don’t want to be in it. I sleep best when motionless. If I’m in a big bed alone, I want to be smack in the middle. Otherwise, the side closest to the window of whatever room the bed is in.

    4. Kids in the bed with you — yes or no?
Given the age of my offspring, that would be all kinds of wrong. When they were babies, sometimes they’d pile in early in the morning as we were waking up. It was cute back then.

    6. Pets in the bed with you — yes or no?
Yes, ON, not “in,” and only if they are smaller than a loaf of bread and weigh less than the average toaster oven.

    7. Did you sleep with any stuffed animals when you were a kid? If so, what were they?
Yes, because I was forbidden to have pets on the bed, or even in my bedroom. Now that I’m the mom, I do what I want. So there. When I was a kid it was a large stuffed yellow spaniel dog named Cuddly Dudley. There’s one going for over $2000 on eBay even as I type.

    8. If you’re having a sleepless night, what do you do to help you sleep?
Earplugs. And then I toss and turn until I finally fall asleep.

    9. What size is your bed?
Queen. I’m sure there’s some kind of psychological statement in that choice of mattress size.

    10. What is your favorite kind of sheet? (100% cotton, blend, satin, etc.)
300 count Pima cotton. Made in the USA too, please.

    11. On the bottom sheet — flat with hospital corners or a fitted sheet?
I am not living in a hotel. Fitted, always.

    12. Do you have a memory foam mattress topper and, if so, will you give it to me?
    No and no.

    13. Please describe your bed in lurid detail — colors, patterns, pillows, etc.
It’s boring, really; it has various blankets and quilts depending on how cold it is, spread atop whatever color of sheets I pulled out of the cabinet when last I changed them (right now, boring ivory). It has three pillows (two for the Mr, one for me), a dust ruffle because that hides all the dust bunnies underneath until I get around to vacuuming, and the mattress is still in like-new condition despite the fact that my water broke in that bed 14 years ago when I went into premature labor. Yay for plastic matress covers! Oh, I’m sorry, was that TMI? You DID ask for “lurid detail.”

    14. Just for bed adornment now — how many pillows is just right? How many is too many?
You mean those decorative things? I have no patience with them.

    15. How many pillows do you like to sleep with?
One is fine for me, but if there are more I don’t mind.

    16. Describe your ideal bedroom atmosphere for sleeping. For instance, do you like a cool room? Warm room? Really dark? Some peeking light? Etc.?
Honestly, I don’t care. I can sleep with a light on or in total darkness or anything inbetween. If the room is cool or even cold I’ll just throw on more blankets. If it’s warm I’ll kick them off.

    17. What or where is the best sleep you’ve ever had outside a bedroom?
The sofa in my daughter’s apartment. I think the nighttime view of the lights around Lake Union had something to do with it.

    18. How old were you when you graduated from a crib or bed with rails to a real bed?
So young I don’t recall. Probably before I was two.

    19. If someone in the bed has a problem that keeps the other awake — snoring, jimmy legs, etc. — who should leave the bed? The person doing the bugging or the person being bugged?
I think the person being bugged should just deal with it or leave. It’s not like it’s being done on purpose. And I’m the one who usually is being bugged, so I can say that.

    20. TV in the bedroom — yes or no?
NO. That’s a dealbreaker, that is. I’d rather deal with snoring, jimmy legs (whatever those are) and teeth grinding than a TV in my bedroom. No TV ever in my bedroom.

    21. Do you wake to an alarm? If so, what is the sound?
Yes, it’s the whining of a dog wanting breakfast.

    22. Does your bedroom door have a lock on it?
Yes. It came in handy when the kids were too young to get the concept of “knock first.”

    23. Do you have summer bedding and winter bedding?
No. Just more blankets in winter, less in summer.

    24. Women: Do you sleep in jammies, nightgown, underwear, or ….. you know ….
Yes to all the of the above, except the “you know;” the 1994 Northridge earthquake put an end forever to that. I have a neurotic fear that I’ll be woken by another quake, and have to get out of the house fast. I have shoes by the door too, for the same reason.

  19. 1. What is your optimal number of sleep hours per night?
8-10 (sometimes as much as 12)

    2. How many hours do you typically get?
    5-6

    3. You are lying in a big bed. Are you — or would you want to be — on the “driver’s side” or “passenger’s side” of the bed?
Right now I would be on the “passenger’s side,” but we vary depending on where we’ve lived and the layout of the bedroom.

    4. Kids in the bed with you — yes or no?
    Typically no, but occasionally, sure.

    6. Pets in the bed with you — yes or no?
    No.

    7. Did you sleep with any stuffed animals when you were a kid? If so, what were they?
Up to about 5, I had a stuffed lion.

    8. If you’re having a sleepless night, what do you do to help you sleep?
Suffer through it. If I don’t have to go to work, I might take a sleeping pill or some other kind of “sleeping aid.”

    9. What size is your bed?
    King

    10. What is your favorite kind of sheet? (100% cotton, blend, satin, etc.)
100% cotton with as high a thread count as I can afford.

    11. On the bottom sheet — flat with hospital corners or a fitted sheet?

    12. Do you have a memory foam mattress topper and, if so, will you give it to me?
Our mattress has a built in memory foam pillow top. We used to have a non-pillow-top mattress with a foam topper and that was a lot of trouble. I prefer our current mattress for easy of use. So, no you can’t have our current one and the old one has already been repurposed.

    13. Please describe your bed in lurid detail — colors, patterns, pillows, etc.
    Green sheets, tan comforter.

    14. Just for bed adornment now — how many pillows is just right? How many is too many?
Two for me, two for the spouse (though we keep extra nearby for propping up to read, etc.)

    15. How many pillows do you like to sleep with?
Two. One under my head, one between my legs (back issues).

    16. Describe your ideal bedroom atmosphere for sleeping. For instance, do you like a cool room? Warm room? Really dark? Some peeking light? Etc.?
Dark as can be. Cold. Fan running.

    17. What or where is the best sleep you’ve ever had outside a bedroom?
I had some damn good sleep in our tent in Afghanistan. Due, I think, to equal parts exhaustion and boredom.

    18. How old were you when you graduated from a crib or bed with rails to a real bed?
    I have no idea.

    19. If someone in the bed has a problem that keeps the other awake — snoring, jimmy legs, etc. — who should leave the bed? The person doing the bugging or the person being bugged?
Seeing as how the person doing the bugging is probably out like a light, the person being bugged should just suck it up and sleep on the couch.

    20. TV in the bedroom — yes or no?
    Yes

    21. Do you wake to an alarm? If so, what is the sound?
    Yes. Local NPR station.

    22. Does your bedroom door have a lock on it?
    Yes.

    23. Do you have summer bedding and winter bedding?
Ish. We’ve got extra blankets to use.

    24. Women: Do you sleep in jammies, nightgown, underwear, or ….. you know ….

    25. Men: Same question. (And, yes, please tell me if you wear a nightgown. Thank you.)
    Undies.

  20. Okay. Super busy today, so I come here and read one person’s answers before I have to get back to work!

sheila — /I lie diagonally across the middle, in a frozen pose like the god Mercury./

    /nightly masturbatory paw-kneading extravaganza./

    Hahahahahahaha. You’re killing me.

    Also:

/I prefer my room to be cold and the blankets warm. It has to be really freezing for me to close the window. I like the cool air, especially under the down comforter. I like things to be pitch black./

This is going to sound wrong, but we could so sleep together. That’s me, exactly. I will even wear a sleep mask to get it dark enough for me.

NF — About MB’s jimmy legs. Sometimes he flails large, which is no bueno, but mostly he flails small. Little leg jerks and whatnot. Poking or nudging him doesn’t help. The small leg jerks can be quite constant, so if they wake me up, I leave the freak to himself. I love the freak, but damn.

  21. 1. What is your optimal number of sleep hours per night?

    7-8

    2. How many hours do you typically get?

Significantly less than that. I really need to learn to start going to bed earlier.

    3. You are lying in a big bed. Are you — or would you want to be — on the “driver’s side” or “passenger’s side” of the bed?

Probably more the driver’s side, or kind of in the middle. But it depends on the layout of the rest of the room, too. In a hotel, depending on where the lamps and TV and whatnot is, it could be passenger. Who knows?

    4. Kids in the bed with you — yes or no?

I don’t have kids. If they were little, like for a nap, sure. Nighttime – get in your own damn bed, kid, that’s why we bought it! (Watch, now I’m going to be one of those people that ends up with kids who refuse to sleep anywhere but in bed with me.)

    6. Pets in the bed with you — yes or no?

If I had pets – definitely. Of course, I let my (now deceased) hamster play in my bed once, and now there are holes in the sheets…

    7. Did you sleep with any stuffed animals when you were a kid? If so, what were they?

Oh gosh, yes. Way too many to count. A wind-up teddy bear from my godmother, a rabbit named Robert, and an unnamed stuffed penguin. Oh, and Rodney the gorilla, who is like, half-stuffed. His arms and feet are plastic, and the hands are half-curled fists so you can hang him from things like the grab bar above the car window.

    8. If you’re having a sleepless night, what do you do to help you sleep?

Pray. Read. Sometimes clean. I’m coming to realize that I have absolutely no idea how to fall asleep when I’m not utterly exhausted. This is probably a bad sign.

    9. What size is your bed?

    Queen

    10. What is your favorite kind of sheet? (100% cotton, blend, satin, etc.)

Cotton in the summer, flannel in the winter

    11. On the bottom sheet — flat with hospital corners or a fitted sheet?

    Fitted

    12. Do you have a memory foam mattress topper and, if so, will you give it to me?

Yes, and yes. If you’ll come to NoDak to get it. I’m currently sleeping in a furnished parsonage, so it’s sort of hit or miss on some of my furnishing…options. I like firm beds. Firm. Like, I would sleep on the floor before I would sleep on a waterbed.

    13. Please describe your bed in lurid detail — colors, patterns, pillows, etc.

No headboard or footboard, and way way way too soft. (Side note: I keep trying to convince my dad to hand-carve me a sleigh bed, and he keeps resisting.) Just this past week I put the flannel sheets on – they are light blue with little penguins playing in the snow. Except no flannel pillowcases. I hate those. My pillowcases at the moment are all bright orange. They match the color of the penguin’s scarf, and when I have to take them somewhere (my grandparents’, a hotel, etc…) they stand out as MINE! and I remember to take them home. Plain white knit blanket. And my amazing!!! denim quilt that my grandma made me for high school graduation. Right now I’m doing okay with that, but it’s going to get colder and I think I’m going to have to add a comforter, too.

    14. Just for bed adornment now — how many pillows is just right? How many is too many?

Four normal sized ones, with maybe a couple throws. More than that and it starts to look like you’re running a department store in your bedroom.

    15. How many pillows do you like to sleep with?

I’m a pillow whore. If it is in my bed, I will sleep with it. At least four. Really more like five or six. Or maybe I just need to find a man.

    16. Describe your ideal bedroom atmosphere for sleeping. For instance, do you like a cool room? Warm room? Really dark? Some peeking light? Etc.?

Cold and dark, with lots of heavy blankets. Noise bothers me a lot less than light when I’m trying to sleep. I’m with whoever said above about the lead vest in the dentist’s office. Sign me up.

    17. What or where is the best sleep you’ve ever had outside a bedroom?

I was a political science major in undergrad, and we had the best lounge ev-ah, the Spillane Room. (Named after…some Spillane guy…former faculty, maybe?) Anyway, there is a long table so we can do paper presentations or working lunches, whatever. A coffee pot, cable TV, you get it. And chairs and couches. They aren’t even all that comfortable (or they weren’t anyway, I think they got new ones shortly after I graduated), but man, when you were burning it at both ends during Finals Week or senior year when theses were due, there was no better sleep than curled up in the chair or stretched out on the couch. Best part? Don’t even need an alarm clock – I could have a friend wake me up when she got back from a class, or the department secretary would come check on us every so often. You could be there all afternoon, or for ten minutes between classes. It was heaven, I tell you, heaven.

    18. How old were you when you graduated from a crib or bed with rails to a real bed?

I have no idea. We moved when I was about three, so I imagine that was probably a good time for my parents to make the transition. But as a tiny baby, I slept in a cradle that my grandpa made by hand for me.

    19. If someone in the bed has a problem that keeps the other awake — snoring, jimmy legs, etc. — who should leave the bed? The person doing the bugging or the person being bugged?

This does not apply to my life. But, it seems to make sense that it would be the person who is awake. Also, this feeds my passive-aggressive tendencies. 🙂

    20. TV in the bedroom — yes or no?

    NO. Under no circumstances.

    21. Do you wake to an alarm? If so, what is the sound?

I SET an alarm. Doesn’t mean I wake to it. 🙂

    22. Does your bedroom door have a lock on it?

I don’t think so. But I do keep it shut.

    23. Do you have summer bedding and winter bedding?

Yup. Loves me some flannel sheets, and the heavy denim quilt.

    24. Women: Do you sleep in jammies, nightgown, underwear, or ….. you know ….

Usually pajama pants and some kind of shirt – tank if it’s ultra-hot, long-sleeved T-shirt the rest of the time.

    25. Men: Same question. (And, yes, please tell me if you wear a nightgown. Thank you.)

I’m not a man. But I think pajama pants on guys are sexy. (Just, you know, offering up my $.02 to your readership, Tracey. 🙂 )

    18. How old were you when you graduated from a crib or bed with rails to a real bed?
    No idea

    Yes

    21. Do you wake to an alarm? If so, what is the sound?

    Yes

    23. Do you have summer bedding and winter bedding?
    No

    25. Men: Same question. (And, yes, please tell me if you wear a nightgown. Thank you.)
Sweat pants or shorts and a t-shirt

  23. Kate P — Hm. I’m trying to think. Well, in the bed in my in-laws’ guest room, I still sleep on the passenger side, listening to the clawing tortoise in the drawer.
