to answer lisa’s question

Here.

Lisa — Are you talking about the plane crash?! Yeah, I’m fine. But damn. Military jet (F-18) crashed about 3 hours ago, oh, about 5 miles from me, into a residential neighborhood. As of now, 2 civilians confirmed dead, 2 missing. Pilot ejected onto baseball field of nearby high school. Guess he was headed for Miramar Air Station — and missed by a few miles. Several houses were decimated though. Lord. So so scary. I hate this stuff. HATE it.

Thank you for asking, though.

Unless you were asking about my general mental/emotional well-being based on the fact that I doodled a beanie angel and posted it with Christmas carol lyrics, well, then, I leave it to everyone else to judge on that score. Physically, though, I am fine.

  1. I was talking about the plane crash! I had just clicked over to you and then it popped up on my phone (I have ABC News updates). How horrific. I have a college friend who works for some ministry in SD and I’m waiting to hear from him.

  2. Phew! I jumped online to check your blog just now because I’ve been worried about you all day and haven’t been able to check on you.

Day-yum. I am so sorry for all those who’ve been affected. Terrible.

  3. Late news is 3 people on the ground are dead, 1 is missing. I heard earlier that it might be a mom and 2 kids and a grandparent, but these things have a tendency to change. Situation in flux. So so sad. I feel sick about it. The pilot ejected at the very last second, apparently, desperate to try to control the plane so he wouldn’t land on any houses. He’s fine, but imagine the emotional burden he’s going to carry. Horrible. The jet lost an engine is what’s been initially reported.

  4. I heard about it last night and I was all “Damn, I hope Tracey and MB are OK.” I’m relieved to hear you are but I’m sad that there were people killed. I was hoping that it was just that some people lost their house.

I feel for the pilot. I’m sure what happened was not under his control, but how awful to go through life knowing what happened.

  5. I had no idea that this had happened so close to you… I hadn’t read the details. I’m glad you’re OK.

That poor pilot, and those people and their homes. So terrible. He may well have saved lives, however, by holding on until the last possible moment. He may even have been trying to get the plane to that ballfield.

  6. NF — From what I’ve heard, that was his goal. He risked his own life to do so. He parachuted down into the ballfield or the canyon near the ballfield — it’s very canyon-y around there — so he was trying, obviously, to do the least possible damage. Eye witnesses said the plane started spinning like “that one in Top Gun.” I’ve heard that quote a couple of times now. Ugh. The victims are two adults and an infant with another child missing. So horrible.
