“the fantasticks” — eons ago

Sixteen-year-old Luisa, dreamer and slight psychotic, bursts into song mere moments after twirling onto the stage at the top of the show. (Well, at least I had to twirl anyway.)

I’d like to swim in a clear blue stream
Where the water is icy cold
Then go to town in a golden gown
And have my fortune told.

Sure, whatevs, Luisa. Calm down.

Please, God, please! Don’t let me be NORMAL! she pleads at one point.

Luisa’s mom finds her. OMG, Luisa, please just come inside and be normal with me, okay?

But Luisa clearly cannot be tamed.

Or normal either.

Not in those shoes anyhow.

  1. I don’t really know the show. Except I have an image of Ricardo Montalban singing “Try to remember that kind of September” — which I think is from the Fantasticks? Oh and that the show either held or holds the record for longest run on B’way.

Anyway, that outfit is very Betty Buttercup. Which doesn’t seem to go with the lyrics or the character as you describe her.

    Student designer?

  2. roo — Uhm, I honestly don’t remember how the costume came about. I know there was a lot of debate about it between the director and whoever that designer was. (I think a student? I really don’t remember!)

My ego was bothered because …. uh …. it wasn’t flattering. Also, there is a short petticoat thingy underneath the skirt. Very itchy.

And, yes, that song IS from The Fantasticks, but Ricardo Montalban?? I could picture it as a joke, actually.
